This is great news !! Thanks Martin !

Last year there was an informal statement that the data from the CORINE 2006 campaign would be released for all European countries under "free" licenses. I can not find the link anymore but this was mentioned on the french OSM mailing list. However each country is responsible for the release of their data, and it seems to be happening slowly. This is probably something to keep an eye on, though. If you have time to investigate, you may try googling for "corine landcover" and the name of your country (in the local language) and report here whether it is available and under what sort of license !

I recently came across this scenery file, and the results are really stunning - a big thanks for the work!

I would like to add a small comment: In the standard materials.xml which I've been using with 1.9.1, GolfCourse, Dirt and OpenMining were not assigned to any texture, so initially I saw a lot of untextured spots in the mountains, and it took me 2 hours to understand and fix the problem - it would be good to comment on this somewhere.

Amazing, great, superb !!!!!!

If someone would be so kind to publish a tutorial ( ) on how to feed terragear, may be I may try to generate some tiles of Northern Italy ...

It seem that EU (Unfortunately Switzerland isn't EU) is ompletely covered ...

There should be no legal problem in using and redistributing the data : http://www.eea.europa.eu/legal/copyright

I do understand the files may be downloaded from: http://www.eea.europa.eu/themes/landuse/clc-download
where it's requested to fill in a use form (tab on My data) ... I think we should use a similar form submission
(Like: "FlightGear Landscape (www.flightgear.org). Generation of landscape for a flight simulator" and mark the "Educational" tab)

But I have to understand: Does CORINE provide the shape files only, or the elevation files also ???

The procedure with terragear will be same ??? That is :
1) HGT Chop
2) Terrafif
3) Genapts
4) Shape decode
5) FGFS Construct

Is it possible to use the Terragear GUI ???? Or the DOS Command strings have to be used (in which case I guess I'll give up  ) ???

Ciao ... and again compliments !!!!!

Hi Paolo,

Yes, that's a little bit confusing.
Typically the CORINE downloads are protected by a "no commercial use"-clause. I've already asked for clarification wether the CORINE downloads are now covered by the "content on the EEA website" phrase on this page, but didn't recieve any feedback so far.

CORINE is a land cover project, therefore they're providing shapefiles only.

Cheers, Martin.

To Thorsten:
Thanks for the tip, I did not realize that certain textures were introduced in materials.xml only one year ago, and were probably not included inversion 1.9.1.

To Martin:
The current "copyright" page for the EEA (http://www.eea.europa.eu/legal/copyright) states "Unless otherwise indicated, re-use of content on the EEA website for commercial or non-commercial purposes is permitted free of charge, provided that the source is acknowledged."

Also, if you go to their download tool (http://www.eea.europa.eu/themes/landuse/clc-download) and click the "my details" tab, they state that "the information available in this application is under copyright of the EEA and within the public domain. Public domain information in this application may be used free of charge, provided the source is acknowledged."

Does this mean that we can finally incorporate this data in FG ?

Looks like a yes to me, as long as we acknowledge them as the source data. That's what's Martin has been doing for France, and the result should be really stunning in the next scenery generation.

I hope so ....
Unfortunately we're now a little bit short in time for the upcoming release due to trying to get all the nice additions in as well as some trouble which would have been hard to predict, so we have to delay all the other nice features after the release.
Fortunately this leaves us a little bit more room for improvement _after_ this release :-)

Cheers, Martin.

In order to understand the reason why I'm so cautious about using CORINE data for FlightGear you should probably know that I've been scratching the CORINE license "issue" for several years already. Over all the time it's been written something similar to "only for non-commercial use" and therefore I wanted to be super-sure not to let FlightGear's "Custom Scenery" efforts getting caught in a license-"trap" via some hidden notes.
After pinging several people I now managed to get a response from a guy who's linked to the EEA and he confirmed that they actually _did_ have a license change affecting CORINE data. So, yes, it looks like incorporating CLC2000v2 is going to be one of the topmost items on the TODO list after we managed to put a World Scenery build together.

Which countries does this cover? Is it worth continuing with the London merge?

Take a look at http://www.eea.europa.eu/themes/landuse/clc-download to see what countries are covered.
Only Switzerland, Iceland, Norway, Ukraine, Kosovo (part of Serbia) are not covered.

Wonderful news ! On the other hand, it looks like the license change for OSM is not happening anytime soon, so I will probably have fun again creating custom scenery :)

Kind of : http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Open ... ation_Plan

In fact, when you read the forums, they say that if they do not find a solution before March 2011 they are likely not to make any change to the licence at all !!

There's an interesting thing in this : when you work with multiple users in a collaborative environment, you have to make sure the licence you are using is the right one, because if you want to change it, it's just impossible !!

Cheers,

Olivier

Coverage is better than you might think, Iceland is, but Andorra is not ;-)
