Nice model. Are you planning to put a translucent skin on it?

Now released in FGADDON.

Image

About SUMPAC aircraft project. This model is to be used in the FlightGear based simulation being installed at the Solent Sky museum in Southampton England. Currently they are using the DaSH as the model for the SUMPAC. It will be switched out for this one once we have all the mesh detail included and a few other bits of code added. The current FDM is the same as the DaSH but we hope to have a new SUMPAC FDM within a month or two. Another project in the works is a more detailed model of the DaSH to be used in our current DaSH project.

This is a very detailed model that has been converted to be used in FG. So for now I have added a persistent GUI choice that defaults to "low detail" as well as a GUI choice for the Mylar skin (version 2 of the original SUMPAC) which also defaults to off. There is still more interior controls mesh to be added to the model.

The contact point for the front wheel is not correct. Please let me know if you have any issues but beware, this is still a WIP.

Awesome! Some comments:
  • FlightGear crashed on loading the preview images. I don't think .jpg files are allowed there (and I don't recall seeing it on any other aircraft), but that could be due to my home-brew OSG build :-) I had to comment out the preview and splash from -set.xml to make it continue.
  • Models/dash.png is missing
  • Models/Effects/sumpacNormals.png is missing
  • FlightGear quits before it is completely loaded, with a JSBSim error:
    Code: Select all
      Trim Results:
              Altitude AGL:    6.9  wdot:  3.21e+01 Tolerance: 1.000000e-03  Failed
               Pitch Angle:   0.48  qdot:  5.14e-03 Tolerance: 1.000000e-04  Failed
                Roll Angle:  -0.27  pdot: -2.30e-03 Tolerance: 1.000000e-04  Failed

      Trim Statistics:
        Total Iterations: 61
        Sub-iterations:
        wdot: 295 average: 4.8361  successful:  0  stability: 2.0312
        qdot: 2.63e+03 average: 43.131  successful:  15  stability: 2
        pdot: 139 average: 2.2787  successful:  61  stability: 2
        Run Count: 9828
    Unfortunately, when I run it with --fdm=null, the sim also crashes upon loading, but without any error. So I'm not sure where the problem is...
All that is with a FG build from April 13. I currently don't have time to have a closer look at the issue, so it would be nice if others could test the aircraft as well and see if it runs on their systems.

Keep up the good work, I would love to be able to fly this wonder! And it would be interesting to see it in action in the museum. I found a preview video showing that you're actually using a stationary bicycle kind of setup to drive the thing!

I don't think .jpg files are allowed

Your probably right, don't know what I was thinking.

Models/dash.png is missing

I purposely removed it and remapped it to sumpac.png. Not sure where I missed that, I'll check the log as well.

Models/Effects/sumpacNormals.png is missing

Again, purposely removed the normal map as I know it isn't made for the SUMPAC, I must have left the call in the effect file.

FlightGear quits before it is completely loaded, with a JSBSim error:

Can you load the DaSH? I just checked it and it has the same trim errors. I think it always has had that and I don' t think it is the cause of the crash. I didn't do the FDM so I never looked into it, but I'll see if in the future we can get that cleared up on the DaSH and it should be fixed on the SUMPAC when it gets its own FDM.

If you get a chance, now that you got past the splash screen issue, would you please comment out the loading of the detailed mesh in Models/sumpac-model.xml

Starting at line 144 comment out this code block...

Code: Select all
<model>
        <path>detailed-mesh.xml</path>
        <offsets>
            <x-m> 0 </x-m>
            <y-m> 0 </y-m>
            <z-m> 0 </z-m>
        </offsets>
        <condition>
            <equals>
                <property>/sim/rendering/high-detail</property>
                <value>1</value>
            </equals>
        </condition>
    </model>

There is a piece of of mesh in the detail that used to give me trouble, maybe it is still an issue.

Thank for the report Gijs, I'll track this down.

Those trim errors can occur if your AeroRP or/and CG are in a bad place. But they don't stop the sim, it loads up still.

Did you get cockpit added?

@Gijs I think the crashing is unrelated. The DaSH is also using JPG's as well as other aircraft. If you could try loading the DaSH to rule out the JPG's.

I suspect the detailed mesh or maybe the missing normal map which I just pushed a change eliminating the call to it, Although it looked like it was set to 0 anyway.

I also just pushed a new set of .ac models with some internal corrections. It also eliminated a suspect piece of mesh in the detailed ac.

I have some of it added, but there is more.

Someone else was having issues with it crashing and now it's working for them, so I may have fixed the problem. Once that is verified here, I plan to add back in a suspect piece of mesh and see if it still works. I made a couple changes that could have been the issue and I am not sure it was the suspect mesh.

Any format that OSG supports should be allowed including JPG. I've always used JPG for the F-15 previews. Generally because of the better compression I tend to use JPG files for all non-transparent textures.

Hi,

@wlbragg: Nice work, a fresh update from FGAddon and she loads fine now!
@Richard: Thanks, I didn't know that. Must check my OSG compilation then.

@Gijs thanks for letting me know.

I'm going to be adding the entire interior mechanical systems once I get them scaled down in size a bit. I think I will have to put it all in the detailed side for the convenience of FG users.

This is a bit of a special project in as much as we want all the mesh detail because it is representing the real life aircraft in a museum. As long as the FDM and visual animation frame rate is sufficient we're not concerned about the +2 minutes of load time. It's really to be loaded once a day and were going to use a custom reset feature to place it back at the threshold.

Speaking of, anyone know how to catch a total FDM failure when it happens and keep it from freezing the sim to a point that requires a reboot? That would be a failure such as a red-out screen or the "broken aircraft" model. I would like to have a safeguard that catches that, then I can alert the user and reset the aircraft.

Dear wlbragg, would you explain what are you talking about, I never had such a thing occur, and I've done extensive G testing with my Viggen and F-15 control systems

FDM failure is probably the wrong wording to use, more like a simulator freeze or crash event?
I've never actually researched what the event is or what properties might be thrown when the sim freezes due to a crash. The "crash" being a red screen or the default broken gear animation that FlightGear can produce when certain thresholds are exceeded.
