Free, Open-Source Georeferenced Airport Diagrams

Postby jlmcgraw » Thu Jun 26, 2014 3:53 am

All,
As an addition to my code for georeferencing Instrument Procedures I've written a utility to do the same for airport diagrams.

Like my other code it doesn't currently work with miltary diagrams but it does work for 650 civilian airports

The code is available here: https://github.com/jlmcgraw

Load the aviatonMap project (https://github.com/jlmcgraw/aviationMap) into QGIS and then load the .VRT output of this utility to see how it matches up with the data from the FAA (kinda cool to see it work)

Please let me know if you have any questions or comments.

thanks for the update, this should come in very handy for the EFB work that some people are currently doing:

http://wiki.flightgear.org/Canvas_EFB_Framework

Overall, this looks pretty good: https://raw.githubusercontent.com/jlmcg ... WY-19L.png
And we should be able to process those VRT/XML files using scripting & canvas: https://github.com/jlmcgraw/aviationMap ... WY-19L.vrt
http://www.gdal.org/gdal_vrttut.html

However, we should probably explore setting up some kind of web service, or at least a central ftp/http server for accessing all these files, so that we can load them into FG.
For the time being, we can fetch raster images (e.g. PNG/JPG) and load arbitrary XML files, too.

(Alternatively, we could use github/gitorious or google code to commit all those files there and make them accessible that way...)

PS: You may want to post a few screen shots and also update the FG newsletter to announce/mention your project there (see my signature for details)
Please don't send support requests by PM, instead post your questions on the forum so that all users can contribute and benefit
Thanks & all the best,
