Thanks! You did a good job. I'll try my best at animating it, and try to get a release version out within a week. :)

I have been playing around to develop my modeling skills and found that the P-40 is a nice aircraft to work on. I did the fuselage then redid the whole of it again as I forgot to put the canopy in  I'll keep updating this link as and when I progress. For the time being the initial body can be seen here, best viewed full size.

Comments appreciated

EDIT

Can anyone give me some advice on modeling the wings, I have done them several times but I am not happy with the overall all result.

I am using ac3d and have tried several ways to create them like using an ellipse, extruding it then creating the shape. Using several ellipses and creating a convex shape from all of them. Using a rectangle and creating the wing shape. I Just cant seem to get the desired effect.

Any help/tips appreciated

MOJO

I have managed to create them now using a simple subdivision :D

Added wings and horizontal stabs, will edit these a little, need to sharpen out the propeller hub after that I will start on undercarriage and everything else

Final update before I go to work. Added machine guns, pitot tube, new prop hub and undercarriage hubs.

Starting to look alright now. Pics best viewed full size

Hey all,

Got a question if some one can provide an answer. When modeling, do you model things like undercarriage doors open or closed?

Many thanks

I don't know if there is any interest in this aircraft anymore but I'll continue with it anyway.

Added landing gear and external fuel tank

Tht looks pretty well, very detailed. Maybe to much vertices on the spinner and some other parts compared to fuselage, but looks already quite good!

Yeah the spinner was there for effect till i can find a better way of doing it without too many vertices. hopefully it will be all complete in a week

Hi Mojo, doors closed: so its easier to make them match perfectly the fuselage shape. I also use an alternate 3D file where I do most of the stuff like checking distances and angles for the animation so I don't take the risk to disturb the final geometry.

Thanks Alexis, I have spent nearly 2 hours trying to get the positioning right of the main gear so that the wheels will fit in the wheel bays, I have made about 5 back ups just in case all goes wrong

So, last night I put my main gear in place and then did a couple of rotations with the gear to see where I should be cutting my wheel wells on the wings. After doing this I wasn't to sure if I was right so could anyone help with this, I'll try and make it as simple as possible.

In the picture you will see that I have the vertices selected on the top of the gear strut, I need the strut and wheel to rotate 90 deg (from the vertices highlighted) so that the wheel faces backwards then I need the strut and wheel again to rotate from the same vertices point up into the wheel well I have cut out. Can I specify in the animations that those points I want to rotate from are where it does rotate from? (if you understand)

I have also found that the wheel strut actually angles forward slightly, will that make any difference?

Many thanks

Looks great, reminds me of MiG-3 high altitude fighter.

Is it high altitude too?

Oh, must be. For planes of that era it's high. Anyway, Your work looks good. Wish You well with it.
