[solved]Those little yellow and blue planes?

Postby Kabuki » Sat Sep 25, 2010 11:42 pm

What are those little yellow and blue planes I see in flightgear? Are they some kind of default generic model of planes that haven't/can't be loaded?

As I understand it, in order to see a plane in mp, you must have a model of the plane on your own system. I don't see them on my aircraft list, and when I try and figure out what they are from the pilot list, ... well, I can't.

So I'm thinking they're "proxy models" for planes that aren't/can't be loaded. But then why aren't they used for all planes in the area that don't exist on the system.

Or are they hacks?

They are indeed the generic model displayed when you don't have the aircraft in your Aircraft folder.

mpmap can help you figure out what people near you are using. If you can't tell from the map label, use chat to ask the pilot.

Could you explain this sentence? Is it that you don't see some aircraft in FlightGear (neither their model, nor the yellow/blue glider) that are on the MPMap?

I could be wrong, but sometimes I see them on the screen view, but nothing seems to be there on the menu>network>pilot list

Those would probably be AI planes parked at an airport or flying AI routes. No pilots, hence not in pilot list.

Grab all the aircraft models in FlightGear and put 'em all in your Aircraft folder. See 'em all fly 'em all!

Not while I'm stuck using a laptop with 2GB, thanks. The generic proxies save RAM. Every different model you can see takes up its own resources to render. Definitely the thing to do if you do have the resources, however.

Also, some aircraft I see online are not available in the main archive. E.g. I'm seeing a lot of Tucano-27 of various denominations lately. No Tucanos on the main archive site.

BTW, any idea how much disk space this would require?

My aircraft folder, with about 150 different aircraft, takes up about 1.61 GB, which somehow works out to 1.65 GB of space on the disk.

That's not bad at all. The reason it takes up slightly more on the disk than the actual data is because a directory/folder has some overhead of its own, even if it's empty.

They are the default model for the aircrafts you do not have (and therefore cant display)
