Start with rocks

An exciting "new" option in FlightGear, that includes reflections, lightmaps, the particle system etc.. A lot is yet to be discovered/implemented!

Start with rocks

Postby gral » Tue Aug 17, 2010 10:02 pm

Hello all,

I started with a new rock texture today. Without the shaders it looks not very good, to dark in colors and to hard in contrasts I think.

Edit: Url instead of image

Next step was to use an effect for rocks similar to the crop shader and I got a better result:

Edit: Url instead of image

Then I inverted some parts of the crop shader. I wanted to have some vegetation where terrain is flat instead of color blurbs where terrain is steep. This becomes more 'real' for terrain in higher mountains. This is the latest result at the moment, and of course, the color and light setting is still not finished yet

Too bad we have no 'rock' landclass yet (?). Most terrain here is classified as 'herbtundra', so I made my tests with this one.

Cheers, gral

That's looking great, so we'll get even more appealing mountains :). What if you managed to make it so that it's using the rock texture just for the steeper elevation changes, and for flat(er) terrain it would use the grassy/tundra one, that way we wouldn't need a special landclass for rocks.

This could be a very clever idea.
Here I found some reference for tundra/gravel/rock transition

We do have a rock land cover type, however it is only used in custom scenery (not a part of the generic vmap0 coverage).

Yes, was wrong to say 'no rock landclass', sorry for that. I should say: Too bad we have no rock covered in world scenery except some custom scenery. Too bad this is mostly covered as 'herbtundra' here. But what a big luck that Corine comes with rock, at least for europe :) Does it come with 'v1' or another coverage once for the rest of the world?

Third screen of first post above should be replaced with this to show what could come with rock/vegetation mix.

It’s all a bit dark now and colors are still not right - this is because the shaders are not working correctly here with my recent GIT snapshot. But this is only a temporary bug, I am sure.

Ah, at least the light is back with this shader. Now the cows are still missing. Does someone know where I can find custom scenery with landclass 'cs_rock'? And where I find a larger area with herbtundra cover (custom scenery or standard) outside Europe? Thanks in advance!

BTW. I will delete some of the images in this thread because of performance, I apologize.

I don't think cs_rock is in the current scenery. More likely, there is "Rock" and in materials.xml it is also used for "BarrenCover". You could search @ mapserver.flightgear.org by displaying only this layer on the map.

Hi,

I can only second this. It looks great and I get the feeling of flying over an "Alm" :)
Very good that you take care of the landclass textures. IMHO one of the most important parts of a good flight experience.
Keep it up!

Cheers,
Chris

The mountains are getting better and better. Cows would be great... :D
Did you try this on the Innsbruck scenery?

Awesome job Gral! It's starting to look like those Outerra or OSGearth examples!
Keep up the good work!

You can find cs_rock in the french alps, if you have that scenery downloaded.
