I think I'd rather have avatars than huge pics in signatures.
One other thought is to limit the size of sigs to a certain number of pixels including text and pics.
That works from what I've seen on other busy forums.

Another one is to watch out for excessively long list in the additonal info items such as interests.

uh... when I click that Link I get onto a website- maybe they've disabled direct linking? Just upload it to another pic-hoster. If that doesn't work, convert it into a .jpg and try again

For the record, mine is hosted at http://photobucket.com and it seems to work fine.

It worked ---- once. Someone told me picpaste isn't a good host so I'll try another one. Thanks for the suggestions.

Having reduced an image to a very poor resolution 100x100 (just 5.9KB) file in photobucket, it still has not appeared here, although I am getting no error messages. I am wondering if I need to post something in order for it to be activated, so this is my 'test post' to find out!

Well, I shouldn't have changed it should I...

I changed it to the following, more appropriate 'FlightGear' screenshot; and it has vanished again!

Make sure you link to the image itself, and not some random page the image is on. Pretty important.

Thanks Nick. - I thought I had!

Clearly I had used it correctly before because my picture was in here. Obviously when I changed the picture, I must have used the page URL, rather than the image.

Anyway, I'll know to be more careful in future! Thanks.

simbabeat wrote:And I found out a little trick about the avatars. The image can be any size. Mine is 1440x873. But just enter 100x100 or any dimension you want in the box and it will work.

Pretty sure that only scales the dimensions for page display. If you're linking an avatar to a big fat picture, then you're making everyone download that big fat picture to display as a teeny-tiny picture. It's better to re-size the image before linking to it as an avatar.

Since this forum doesnt store the pics in any way that would have to be correct and kind of defeats one purpose of size limitation, bandwidth, the other being display.
