VMX22 - Osprey

Postby ot-666 » Mon Mar 08, 2010 4:10 am

I really like to fly the v22 in FG I noticed that the v22 seems to be based on the prototype version of this vtol.

Since I never did any 3d models I thought it could be fun to get into the blender modelling/developing a aircraft thing and figured it is really fun.

I am working on a update of the v22 based on the currents CVS version with a lot of changes to reflect the actual v-22 versions in service. The name is changed to VMX22, cause I later want to include the different versions used today (MV-22, CV-22,HV-22 and UV-22).

The changes so far includes a new fuselage model, landing gear / suspension, working doors (cockpitdoor/crewdoor/cargodoor), new cockpit (still a lot to do), interior for the cargo area.
I changed the fdm to fit the new model with the help of the fantastic YASim import script from mfranz and tried to get as close as possible. Added some modified particle systems for ground dust / dirt effect.

No mapping is done and the colours are just temporary. Still working on new nacelles, fuselage parts and parts of the landing gear hydraulics…

The updated fdm improved the aircraft handling (you can turn now on point while hovering), but I think I need to improve it a lot more.

Since this is my first plane or plane update it will take some time but I will update the progress here.

Cheers, Oliver

And here I was thinking it was supposed to be next to impossible to hover without fully independent rudder control  I hope to see a download soon. I used to fly the V22 a lot in FG.

Very nice Oliver! Did you contact Helijah (the original author) yet? He might be able to provide help on certain parts. And I am pretty sure that he will commit your work to CVS!

Hey Oliver,

Gijs is absolutely right. If you need some information, help with modeling (I see you managed very well already:)) and of course the passage in CVS. I would be honored to do so.

Nice work ;) Thx

Best regards. Emmanuel

Gijs, helijah

thanks for your feedback and offered help.

Actually without all the inspiration from your (and everybody else) great work for flightgear I would have given up after the first 2 days. Reading the forum and studying all the work you guys contributed to the FG world kept me trying and learning.

Especially the nice tutorial from helijah was very helpful http://helijah.free.fr/flightgear/Creation/Creation-en.htm and i am happy you like the changes i did to your model.
I would be happy to see the work I do go to CVS and I will send helijah the stuff as soon something is good enough to be there.
I like to get the model as good as possible over time.

I still got no answer to my 3 state door cycle problem here: http://www.flightgear.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=7010
Maybe Gijs could give me some help here? The cargo door is animated using the door.class you explained there and works nice. But I got no idea how to get the 3 state cycle movement.

At the moment i am working on the nacelles movement (fdm and model) since I figured the turning point is more aft in the original. With the rotors in plane mode (flight position) the engines are too much above the wings at the moment (with some small problems beside the visual appearance caused by that).

uploaded a small video i took, while checking the fdm changes for independent ruder control. Take a look here… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6IgpVqJ1llQ

edit: video link

A little tricky to control... still a much room for improvement, but I am working on it.

Thanks, Oliver

Truly excellent work, a very difficult bit of engineering on a hybrid bird that has tested the best engineers in the country. Don't allow yourself to be frustrated by the Osprey, once she is done she will be incredible to fly, especially during the tricky rotation form VTOL to horizontal flight regime.

Looking forward to adding this incredible bird to my collection!

Amazing better than the existing one when finished.
could you release it with some extra liveries?

Nice!
I'd recommend keeping the Autopilot files from the old V22, since it's one of the few remaining reliable APs.
Look for "B-BIRD" "N127KY" or "AVA0004" -that's me.

Despite having over 1700 posts here, I am not even close to being the most skilled guy here... I'm just words and bad drawing, not experience. :P

Still working hard on updating the v22…

The upper/rotating part of the fuselage model and the wing position are updated. Engines are completely remodelled. The rotation point and axe of the wing and the fuselage is changed and I updated the wing and engine turning point fdm.

The engine nacelle / wing connection and the visible parts of the wing rotating and engine tilting mechanics are is still unfinished, but hopefully will be done today.

Thanks for the AP tip. To be honest I never used the AP on the v22, but I will investigate.

There will be a livery select at the end, but still no mapping is done since I still change the fuselage model.
