List last updated Saturday, March 13th, 2010 @ 0050 UTC

East Hub Controllers: jomo (Potomac Approach on 119.7); wookierabbit (Baltimore Tower on 119.4)
West Hub Controllers: SP-CEZ (Salt Lake Approach on 124.3); redneck (Salt Lake Tower on 118.3)

It's hard to believe, but it's already time to start gathering pilot assignments for TransGear Airways 8! Flights are first-come-first-served, and newcomers are always welcome -- however, please be reminded that FGCom use is mandatory for TGA events, and that the ability to navigate SIDs and STARs is mandatory for West hub (2xx) flights. (Simple direct-route or visual navigation is permitted for the East hub, 1xx-level flights.) Please be sure to choose an aircraft from the Approved Equipment list available on the TGA website and to consult it for any procedural questions, especially first-timers. It may be found at http://transgear.treborlogic.com.

A new routing model is in the works for the April event (TGA9) -- details will be forthcoming soon!

So -- let's hear it; who's in for what may potentially be the last TGA event under the "original" format?

I'll take TGA150 on the East again in a 787.

Each event seems to go smoother & smoother for me so hopefully this one goes well on my end. Can't wait!

I'll take TGA135 in a 777.

Here's hoping they don't drop the schedule bomb on me at work.

TGA244, again, please. I'll confirm aircraft selection closer to the time - maybe the 777-200 I've used before, but I'm hoping to use the MD-81, CRJ-200 or one of the 737 variants, if I can find one with a suitable cockpit for conducting ILS approaches. Suggestions welcome on that point - the CRJ is beautiful, but the current cockpit is just too sparse for realistic IFR navigation, and the MD-81 likewise.

The CRJ-200 has the instruments necessary for an ILS approach, but it would have to be flown by hand. The 733 and 787 are great for this sort of event.

I've fixed some autopilot bugs in the CRJ200 locally, and it seems like that would be no issue (using the generic AP of course). I'm seeing some Nasal errors loading the flightdirector.nas code, which I guess may be making the instruments less functional - can you post a shot of your CRJ-200, during an ILS approach?

As for the 733, do you mean with the 2D panel, or have I missed some improvements to the 3D cockpit?

Hi, I guess I will sign up for TGA118, since TGA115 seems to taken, strangely, even though no one has asked for it above this post? :? Or did they PM you?

I will be flying an MD-81, however that might change, I have to test it in 2.0.0

Thanks,
Nathan

The aircraft downloads page has now been updated, and there is a new 737 by HHS, with a partialy complete (I think) 3D Cockpit.

Maybe you missed an update to the 3D cockpit. The one I have from HHS has ILS instruments in the PFD.

Like a short video clip? Sure. Now, is that with the AP running, or me flying it mostly by hand. I have found it can keep on the glideslope, but it can't follow a LOC or VOR without thrashing violently side to side.

The reservation was made via e-mail.

zakalawe wrote:I'll confirm aircraft selection closer to the time

I've listed the 777-200ER for now, but of course you're not locked into that.

zakalawe wrote:I've fixed some autopilot bugs in the CRJ200 locally, and it seems like that would be no issue (using the generic AP of course).

If you have a corrected CRJ-200 which works with the 2.0.0 flight manager, I'd be interested in getting a copy or knowing how to fix the issue.

To all that have signed up for flights already -- thanks! To those that haven't -- keep 'em coming!

Well, I couldn't get a decent video, but I have a pic showing that it does have ILS instruments. The only semi-important things it's lacking are the DME and a way to hear or see the ident for the radio beacon you're tuned to.
Unfortunately, I can't upload it.

At least in 1.9.1, the DME reading would appear in the upper left corner of the primary flight display. Weirdly, though, it would flash on and off in a slow (like 2-3 second) cycle.

In the CRJ, really? I'm using 1.9.1 right now, and I have no DME that I know of. Maybe it's just small enough that I don't notice it. I'm used to the 787 where I get it in both the PFD and the HUD, steady on unless I'm going out of range. The CRJ appears to depend on the 787's instruments, so I expected it would have the DME in the HUD as well, since I rarely need, or look for, information that isn't available to me through the custom airliner HUD.

I'll take TGA 122, in a TBD aircraft. What aircraft I choose will be determined on 2 things:

1) If the 787 Altitude Hold has been fixed in its 2.0 version.
2) If I can figure out the new route manager.

Chances are it will be a 787. I've had bad experiences with the 777 ILS both times at KBWI, and the 787 ILS rocks.

Thank you.

Make sure you're tuned to an ILS with DME, and then look for small white numbers in the upper left corner of the artificial horizon, near the airspeed hold readout.

ChocBoy wrote:I'll take TGA 122, in a TBD aircraft.

I've listed you as using the 787 for now -- just let me know if that changes.

hovkid wrote:I will be flying an MD-81, however that might change, I have to test it in 2.0.0

Good news -- I just flew it in 2.0.0 and found that the route manager and default autopilot in the MD-81 seem to play pretty nicely. The only thing I found, which seems to be common with many jet aircraft that use the generic autopilot, is that the climb and descent rates are way too slow. So instead of letting the aircraft automatically find its altitude hold setting, I change modes to "feet per second hold" while climbing and descending, and use values of 2000, 1500, -1500, or -2000 depending on the need. Of course I have to watch when it gets close to the target altitude and change it back. I use the same technique when descending in the CRJ, although its climb rate seems adequate.
Cheers,
