FlightGear Wiki in your language!

Postby Gijs » Mon Sep 21, 2009 8:10 pm

Hi,

since last weekend, the FlightGear Wiki supports multiple languages. From now on every article can be translated into any language, increasing the user friendliness for non-native English speaking people.

We need YOU!
As we have nearly 750 articles (some are smaller than others) it is a hell lot of work to translate all those pages. Me and a couple of others started translating already, but we defenitely could use some help, to be precise: your help! (Almost) Everyone speaks more then one language, I won't be suprised if most of the FG users are non-native English speakers.

If we all just translate one or two pages every now and then, it would not take *that* long to have atleast the most important articles (like Flying the helicopter, FlightGear, Installing Scenery and New to FlightGear).

Examples
For examples of already translated (only into a couple of languages) articles, take a look at the Main Page.

How do I start translating?
First you need to find an article that you like to translate. Then in the URL bar of your browser, add a slash (/) followed by the abbreviation of your desired language (see here for a list) and go to that page. So if I wanted to translate the TerraSync article into Dutch, I would visit the http://wiki.flightgear.org/index.php/TerraSync/nl page. As you can see this page does not exist yet, so we are sure no-one translated it in Dutch so far.

Now we translate the actual article. You can leave wiki links as they are (pointing to he English article), unless the article is translated into the language of your article. In that case you make a wiki link like this: [[Main Page/nl|Hoofdpagina]]. Only 'Hoofdpagina' will be shown in the article, but it points to Main_Page/nl.

At the far top (but below the afd, stub and cleanup templates) you need to place the Language selection bar template. It is very straight forward. Just add this:
Code: Select all
{{Languages|PageName}}

The PageName is the name of the original (English) article, so without the language prefix (/nl, /de, /fr etc.). So for the Main Page that would be
Code: Select all
{{Languages|Main Page}}

Add this template also to the English version of the article (if not already done).

Thanks a lot for your translations or any other contributions you make to the wiki! Your hard work is really appreciate by all FG users!

Kind gegards,
Gijs

Well, I do not understand polish, so it would be better if someone that understands both Polish and English could copy all your articles to the official wiki. I say copy, because we cannot just link to your wiki, all articles have to be in the same database...

Cheers,
Gijs

Just translate pages to pages like Main_Page/fi or FlightGear/fi and add the template in the way I described above.
No-one has to make a lanuage available before you can start translating. ;)

We just switched to a more professional system! The language links appear in the menu now (just like wikipedia), so no need for the template anylonger!

Take a look at the updated translation help page to see how the new system works. As we need to edit every single page that includes the old translation template, I would like to ask your help! Just fixing one or two articles will relieve me a little more.

Thanks a lot for your additions to the wiki!
Gijs

PS: We were happy to welcome the 3.000.000 pageview today!

Why when you are on the french main page and you click "aide" (french for help) you are redirected to the english article ?
Same for image of the day...

Image of the day cannot be translated, it's a generic template, used on all translated main pages. Else we would need to translate articles within a day into a lot of languages (requires a lot of manpower).

All other links can be translated, but they need to have the follow syntax:
Code: Select all
[[fr:Aide|Aide]]

which will show a link like: Aide. The links in the menubar are not yet translated, I'll see if that is possible.
