If that's okay, then I can put together a corresponding skyvector map and write this Wednesday's announcement.

Luffleine, please post your plan in the event thread, thank you for suggesting this event :)

Thanks Luffline,
Thanks Woosh!

Terrific! We should make full use of that and spend a couple of evenings in the Alps.

Yes, preparation advised....

So, for the case that LFHU becomes too busy at times and for those who want to do landing trials in quick succession with minimal radio callouts by hopping back and forth between Méribel and Courchevel in the meantime, I was thinking that the simple rules
  • outbound leg --> go at least 500ft lower than runway (dashed lines)
  • inbound leg --> of course we are approaching from higher
should be able to keep the flight paths separated. Applying that to the official approach patterns could yield something like this, right? What do you think?

Remains the question of paths after failed final and decision to go-around. Am I overlooking this somewhere in the VFR charts? In Méribel it's pretty clear you would turn right to the valley. I added the grey dashed arrows tentatively.

@Luffleine,

sorry to come back about this only now,

again, in mountain, there is no MISSED APPROACH, this just does not exist.

Anyone can read on the respective LFHU (L'Alpe D'Huez), LFKX (MERIBEL). LFLJ (COURCHEVEL) VAC maps,

1. there is no path for MISS APP
but you have instead:
2. PREFERENTIAL EMERGENCY LDG AERA (specified with a QDR (heading to get there and distance) + possible precisions )

MERIBEL
Image

COURCHEVEL
Image

Reasons for this are:
main reason:
- The airspace is not design to handle MISSAPs

other strong reasons:
- SAR in mountain are crazy complicated, crashing in defined place allow to pre install SARs in vicinity...
Aerodromes are often to small to have proper SARs facilities and ACFTs use to crash further ...

So,
the right procedure is:
- Insure ?
- Do a RWY overflight as noted on the VAC Map,
- New Integration,
- Minimum Speed "+ a notch",
- Ascertain your landing.

This is why flying in mountain is so "lovely" and need a special license...

Awesome information.
There is really so much to learn. Our GA-wednesday group brings really one challenge after the other.

For most of us it might be a bit hard to find time for preparation among other commitments.
We'll compensate by good intergroup communication/training and shifting our main flying area the Alps and Glasgow.

And I am really looking forward to the snowball fights :)

I just might have half an hour to join you today in the Alps - in that case, I'll be in my custom PC-6, so please download it beforehand ! ;) (Sorry, no time to read any charts or do any other preparation … also I can't be on voice ! :( )

I have, from those times, one copy of the scenario.
I am happy to share it with you.

On my side the scenery does not play nice with the default Terrasync scenery.
In .fgfsrc I have: --fg-scenery=/opt/fg/SC/Scenery
I am on current 'next'. Other custom sceneries are disabled.

I run FGFS like that: ./run_fgfs.sh --timeofday=morning --airport=LFHU --aircraft=...

The result is, that my aircraft ends on Terracync scenery, below the custom one. See image:

Also, several models used are not included with the scenery:
50.55 [WARN]:OSG Error reading file Models/Airport/traffic.xml: file not found
50.55 [ALRT]:terrain Path "/opt/fg/SC/Scenery/Objects/e000n40/e005n45/3039691.stg": Failed to load OBJECT_SHARED 'Models/Airport/traffic.xml'

Same alerts for 'fourgon.xml', 'Boundaries/Hedge-2m.xml', 'Boundaries/Hedge-10m.xml'.

@Mariusxc

precedence

when you have > than 1 version of installed scenario

pay attention to have the patch in priority position in your list of scenaries.

in ./run priority = ← the the left
in launcher priority = ↑ to the top

If you intend to start from LFHU, it is tricky, there is a readme file that might help.

Best, is D-MIKA said, fly to LFHU or Courchevel from somewhere else.

I know that way it does work.

A very interesting and busy event in the Alps this week, merci beaucoup to our ATC's and thank you to D-MIKA for the very enjoyable event and description in the event thread.

Eagle caught practicing before the event (with gear down on this approach) - a shame you couldn't make the event Eagle
