Re: Wednesday information India: No, Morocco!

Postby Ysop » Wed Jul 20, 2022 4:36 pm

Here we go with the next of our nice and friendly Wednesday events:

As for most of us it is pretty hot these days, we will easily cope with Morocco's heat.

Wednesday information Oscar LSMA to LSML

Postby Volador » Wed Aug 10, 2022 5:00 pm

Information Oscar (a copy of Mike: Alps, destination Lodrino LSML)
Wednesday 10th August 2022, 19:00UTC

This Alps excursion with special permissions for military bases will take us roughly South East from LSMA Alpnach (elevation 1460ft) to Lodrino LSML (elevation 850ft), but in-between we will cross the Alps at a height of around 8000 ft (powerful engine or turbo prop recommended) before a spectacular, long descent to LSML calling at a few airfields along the way.

Flying time is estimated by skyvector to be 49 mins but we should add another 30mins at least for the 3 stops. Allow 1hr30mins after wheels up.

As always everyone is welcome to join the event, all we ask is to please post your general aviation aircraft ahead of time on the discussion thread (link below). (mumble recommended, typing is slow for comms)

Meet and chat: 19:00 UTC (Mumble GA-Wednesday channel)
Where: LSMA (special permission has been granted)
Wheels up: 19:30 UTC
Comms: Mumble channel 'Special events/GA-Wednesday' for chat and comms
Aircraft: any GA, C182, Turboprop etc from the Flightgear Hangar- Aim for around 120kts 8,500ft max
Insim weather: (Thanks Mariusz) Paste this into manual input: XXXX 121100Z 17010KT 12SM SCT052 FEW300 25/08 Q1022 NOSIG
Insim time: Afternoon

Mostly VFR but I'll have a scout for some Nav-aids and update this post if I think they'll be useful.

Route here:
https://skyvector.com/?ll=46.7090544786 ... 617N00900E

Pre-event discussion
Check out the discussion and say hi on the dedicated discussion thread viewtopic.php?f=10&t=39025&p=403705#p403705 and post your aircraft type there ahead of time so we can download it in advance and see each other on the multiplayer rather than the default glider avatar.

"Watch out for that fence"

ENFL - ENSD - ENOV
Around 40 minutes flying plus break and go arounds (fence encounters?) = around 1 hour

For those not following my attempt at radio navigation description, the skyvector route is here: https://skyvector.com/?ll=61.98005894173708,6.059406819043892&chart=301&zoom=4&fpl=%20ENFL%206146N00557E%206151N00600E%20ENSD%206151N00618E%206155N00617E%206203N00624E%206205N00607E%206209N00559E%20ENOV

ENFL
Tune NDB radio to 384 and standby to 288
Depart ENFL heading 066' climb to 4000
When NDB reads left 90 degrees turn Left Hdg 016' and then follow the fjord valley
Descend to 1500 by the end of the valley and switch to NDB 288
At the valley mouth turn sharp right around the headland and follow the NDB 288 needle to the airport.
Land ENSD (altitude 177) and... "Watch out for that fence!!"

Have a quick break and tune NDB to 369 and standby to 389

Depart ENSD and get onto heading for NDB 369 (about 072') climb to 3000
Switch NDB to 389. Once needle points 90' left, look out and turn left through gap in hills following the NDB 389 (about 345')
Just over the hill and at the waters edge turn right onto (around) Hdg 020', heading for the valley between the two distant hills.
After a few minutes there will be two lakes and NDB 389 needle will be pointing left (about 300'). At the second lake turn left following the valley, roughly onto the NDB 389 heading 290'.
Adjust heading to keep following the fjord , around 290' and later 310'
Stay on the left of the fjord
Descend to 1500 and watch the NDB 389 needle, once NDB reads 90' to the right, turn sharp right onto NDB 389 needle and land ENOV

Time allowing: Bonus return trip via different route to ENSD to avoid that fence one more time to finish.
Tune NDB to 384 and standby to 408
Depart ENOV climb to 3000 and follow NDB 384
When the needle swings behind you swap to NDB 408 and follow the fjord to the left
Keep the NDB roughly ahead and descend to 1500
Follow the fjord and land ENSD once more and do watch out for that fence!

Once again, anyone can join in and you'll get a warm welcome - we have a range of experience between us, come and share your experience or pick up some tips on a very relaxed, fun event.

Meet and chat 19:00 UTC (Mumble GA-Wednesday channel)
Wheels up: 19:30 UTC
Comms: Mumble channel 'Special events/GA-Wednesday' for chat; Standard Jisti link for screenshare https://meet.jit.si/FGFS-GA-Wednesday 17-8-2022
Aircraft: GA, C182, Turboprop - Aim for around 120-130 kts 4000ft max
Insim weather: Live weather (or Border of high pressure if live weather is non-VFR)
Insim time: Afternoon

Check out the discussion on the dedicated discussion thread viewtopic.php?f=10&t=39025&start=1200 and post your aircraft type there so we can download it in advance and see each other on the multiplayer.

And i have read in the wiki, that all we need is advanced weather + Terrain Effects and Generate Thermals activated therein.

Also be sure to have the latest ASK21 glider and the c182s addon version ready for towing :).

We can use the old assigned starting positions again:
(just drop them in the launcher location input box and adjust heading in the location dialog):

Please tell which one you'll use, so we don't crash into each other :)

- P1 47.292474, 12.789991 @160° (i'll take this one)

- P5 47.291897, 12.788799 @345°
- P6 47.291663, 12.787390 @345°
left of P6 are still some spots left, if needed.

You might want to start directly with your glider on the runway and walk if forward before connecting.

TheEagle's scenery improvements: https://github.com/TheFGFSEagle/Austria-scenery

ASK21-dev: https://github.com/ysopflying/flightgear-ask21
Alternatives:
LS4a
ASK13 (if you want to have it traditional)

- Starting time = noon
- Weather = manual input: "XXXX 121100Z 17010KT 12SM SCT052 FEW300 25/08 Q1022 NOSIG" (QNH is 30.17 inHG)

Hints on soaring:
If you have not yet done it, welcome to the most challenging and relaxing way of flying!
As above mentioned planes are JSBSim, it is recommended to turn the turbulence settings down.
Use advanced weather settings as described here: https://wiki.flightgear.org/Soaring
As in all of our evenings, we'd enjoy shared learning experience, so we can talk you through in case of problems with thermaling.
This video could be found useful: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Mw7ioso9YE
"ctrl-u" could be your friend as well, but this should give a beer to the group.

Thanks for TheEagle for towing service!

In addition to my custom scenery mentioned above, we can try out [urlhttps://sourceforge.net/p/flightgear/fgaddon/HEAD/tree/trunk/Addons/Aerotow%20Everywhere/]PlayeRom's Aerotow Everywhere addon[/url] if there's not enough live towing service available ! :)

Re: Wednesday information Papa: Papua - a series (part 1)

Postby TheEagle » Wed Aug 31, 2022 5:39 pm

Yeah, it's me again … this is the start of a series where we'll be scouting the land of the one hundred short bush dirt airstrips - Papua (divided into the Indonesian province Papua and the independent state Papua-New-Guinea) ! A small note on the ICAO codes for some of Papua's airstrips - they do not seem to have an "official" ICAO, so we have to use the XPlane "identifier" for each airport - just so that you don't wonder about the 7-digit ICAO codes ! ;)
We start at Ihu (IHU), fly east to Kerema (AYKM), then continue north stopping at Andakombe (ADC), Ande (XAY002P) and Marawaka (MWG) and ending at XAY000Z (Wuyabo). All but the second and third airstrips are pretty challenging, being situated on mountain sides and having runways shorter than 2000 ft - but the real challenge we will save up for next week ! :)

Route & Schedule
Route: IHU - AYKM - ADC - XAY002P - MWG - XAY000Z (View on SkyVector)
Meet and chat 18:00 UTC / 20:00 CEST, departure 18:15 UTC / 20:15 CEST

Simulator settings
Weather: Real world, or Border of a high pressure region
Time: Clock time or Afternoon

Scenery
My custom Papua scenery at https://github.com/TheFGFSEagle/papua-scenery is required for this series - without it, you won't have most of the airports !

Aircraft
STOL aircraft are recommended, PC-6 is not a must for this first part of the Papua series (it's a bit broken right now) - DHC6 is perfect, even the C208B will do !

So is there a quick Notepad ++ hack we can do on the FDM get the plane to at least load? I am getting a warning "Aircraft flight control element has problems in file Aircraft/pilatus-pc6-family/Systems/pc6-b2h2-fdm.XML".

Postby TheEagle » Tue Sep 06, 2022 8:09 pm

This is the second part of the Papua series
We start where we left last time - at XAY000Z (Wuyabo). First we fly north to Aziana (XAY0016) which has one of the steepest runways on the world at 20° (the one from the video Ysop linked) - you'll be landing (or not) in a climb of at least 1500 feet, so keep a bit of speed on the approach - stopping should be no issue !
We then continue south-east stopping at Engati (EGA) and Bulolo (AYBU) then north and finish at Nadzab (AYNZ).

Route & Schedule
Route: XAY000Z - XAY0016 - EGA - AYBU - AYNZ (View on SkyVector)

Postby TheEagle » Wed Sep 21, 2022 4:26 pm

In this part, we'll be visiting the most airstrips ever in one session ! Starting at Nadzab (AYNZ), we first head north into the mountains to AYLO and AYYW, then west for one of the shortest flights on the world - the distance to the next stop AYSP is just a whopping 3.7 miles - that's just a third longer than the longest runway on the earth ! From there we continue north-east through the mountains stopping at AYUT, AYIS, AYBC, and AYGH, after leaving the mountains to the south for our last airport DPU. That makes … **enumerating objects … 100 %** **counting objects … 100%** … 9 airstrips !

Postby TheEagle » Wed Sep 28, 2022 12:27 pm

Part 4 of the Papua series - another trip from the "peculiar" category, since the straight line distance between each of the five airstrips we'll be visiting is almost exactly 25 nautical miles ! Flying straight all the time is boring, of course - so don't worry, we'll have a little more distance to cover ! ;)

Re: Wednesday information Uniform: Alp formation

Postby Ysop » Sun Oct 02, 2022 9:03 am

This week's event is the opportunity to grab the T-6A, blast low level over the Alps, disregard any noise regulations, demonstrate the population, what they are paying taxes for and have a good time with a nice CO2-footprint.

The idea is to fly in formation, so please group up in pairs. We'll organize this during run-up. The route is chose quite short, so we have the opportunity to do loops and similar fun over the base.

The T-6A does not have a radar altimeter, so you can use the following rule of thumb:
If you can see sheeps, you are at 250ft.
If you can count their legs, you are at 100ft.

Information Volvo: Scottish Isles, destination Wick

We're off to Wick but we have to make calls at around 5 small airports on the way. This is an event were you'll need to keep your eyes on stalks and communicate clearly to avoid collisions. Starting at Papa Westray our first destination is a mere 2 nm from the departure point, we'll continue a route calling at small airports and finish on the mainland at Wick.

Re: Wednesday Information whiskey: perfect pattern

Postby Ysop » Tue Oct 18, 2022 8:41 pm

This week's emphasis will be executing traffic patterns and untowered airports communication.

You are invited to join us at Grenchen (LSZG) and Payerne (LSMP). You can travel between these airfields and practice as many traffic patterns as you like.
Correct entry into the pattern is to be used.
It is not a competition, but performance will be watched in our usual friendly manner.

https://skyvector.com/?ll=47.04283656264832,7.278242643114033&chart=301&zoom=2&fpl=%20LSZG%20undefined%20LSMP

As usual communication via mumble. Meeting 18:00. Our main hub is going to be Grenchen.

Kindly post the aircraft you use in the discussion thread, so we see something nicer than the default glider. Your aircraft should be in the general aviation category..

Traffic patterns will be standard left hand ones at 1000ft AGL.
Downwind leg is to be joined at the beginning with a 45degree angle (european way)
