Fixes and Navaids, again

Postby DuaneBarry » Mon Aug 08, 2022 9:51 am

Howdy.
I found all these posts:

viewtopic.php?f=5&t=27429&start=15
viewtopic.php?f=5&t=27813
https://sourceforge.net/p/flightgear/ma ... /35716882/
viewtopic.php?t=34168&p=338373#p338610

but I come back to the subject because probably not being English my native language I have difficulty understanding the situation.
That's why I try to recap.
If one wants to update the list of fixes and navaids in Flightgear can:
Pay for access to Navigraph, download them and put them in the custom scenery directory, or compile the files by hand by taking the list of fixes and navaids from an unspecified source and putting them in the custom scenery directory, right?
So there is no simple and free "as in beer" way for Flighgear to have updated fixes and navaids?
Free to contradict me if I have said things that are not true.
Thank you.

This, bud, is for you:
https://www.faa.gov/air_traffic/flight_info/aeronav/aero_data/NASR_Subscription/

I don't hink anyone has found comparable free data for outside of FAA's purview.

I think, FG use old XPlane format for those files, current Navigraph files for XP11 may not be usable without some conversion anyway

No.

While I was writing xmly:

https://github.com/bitwisetech/xmly

I noted a few sources for sites related to approach / departure coordinates ( at the bottom of the file under --help arg )

and for a while I was registered on EAD:

https://www.ead.eurocontrol.int/cms-eadbasic/opencms/en/login/ead-basic/

It may be worth registring with them to see if there are better data offered nowadays .

Edit: My registration is still good, it looks like PDF's and charrts only.

You can download data for X - Plane 10 :

These data works without any modification. Download .zip file, extract *.dat files, remove earth_ from filenames, then use gzip and overwrite default data. In my case it works perfectly. I tested it some minutes ago.
All freeware nav data are obsolete, or incomplet. Searching for fresh freeware data is a waste of time. For procedures You can download LEVEL D data and distribute it into proper folders. Example is at viewtopic.php?p=397956#p397956

but LEVEL D data is not all working, because of need to change airport data? F.e. GCTS is 08/26 in the FG files, but AIRAC list it as 07/25, thus some procedures (including approaches probably) for 07 is not showed in list.

upd. it's work sometimes, but inconsistently on 2020.3.13. sometimes it does not load all navpoints in the plan, but show all proper SIDs and STARS - but then you select them (or, they may be selected already by game or from LNM export file) route manager does not add them points to the route and not showing them on the map.

Yes, You are right. Not all procedures works. If the airport is too old and has old runway designation, then new data will not work. But better than nothing.

Main problem is at destination. In the current AIRAC Tenerife South has runways 07 and 25, but airport in FGFS has runways 07 and 25. Runway data in FGFS are obsolete. I'm not sure, if I remember correctly, developers implemented some solution for manual runway designation update in additional XML file. But probably this feature is available only in development version 2020.4.X

whenever that version in NEXT is released for general use, it will not be called 2020.4... in the mean time, there is already windows and mac versions available and linux systems can build their own quite easily... and there's also an appimage for those that prefer to use that method of acquiring and running FG...
"You get more air close to the ground," said Angalo. "I read that in a book. You get lots of air low down, and not much when you go up."
"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."
