Those screenies look really good! Love the PBR and the shadows.

Physics Based Rendering is just plain old ALS but with the material colors tweaked:

painted surface:
Code: Select all
rgb 0.9 0.9 0.9  amb 0.75 0.75 0.75 spec 1 1 1  shi 128

dark metal:
Code: Select all
rgb 0.3 0.3 0.3  amb 0.3 0.3 0.3  spec 1 1 1  shi 45

light metal:
Code: Select all
rgb 0.5 0.5 0.5  amb 0.3 0.3 0.3  spec 1 1 1  shi 45

But it makes a huge difference over
Code: Select all
rgb 1 1 1 amb 1 1 1  spec 1 1 1

Yesterday I encountered a phenomenon I hadn't seen before myself:

A sunset halo:

I'm actually not sure they appear like this - it kinda stands to reason and I haven't found a compelling argument against it, but I haven't seen positive confirmation of them in reality either.

The only explanation I could think of was ice crystals in the upper atmosphere, bit I 'm not sure FlightGear accounts for that.

I had an epiphany: It's probably a rainbow:

Well, yes, it does - it's a halo because it is in the direction of the sun- I'm just not sure they appear that red in RL - theoretically yes, but I've never seen it.

An all-red rainbow I have seen, I think the ones in FG would do that as well.

Wow ! I'm again and again amazed at what ALS can do, which it wasn't even explicitly programmed for !
For anyone not being able to see the rainbow on the screenshot - turn up your screen brightness ! Writing this because it happened to me.

There is really a lot going on in that image, when you look close at it.

Cargo flight from Seattle, WA (KSEA) to Medford, OR (KMFR) today. I did a fun RNAV approach into KMFR that took me through some dangerous terrain.
