Cessna 172s Skyhawk SP (172p retrofit)

Postby wlbragg » Fri Nov 06, 2020 9:43 am

Time to officially announce the c172s SkyHawk SP or c172p retrofit.

Work on this project has come a long way since its conception and is at a point we could really use some vigorous testing to flush out any needed tuning or missing elements.

The other request I am putting out there is to entice one of our expert modelers to make us a brand new detailed c172sp exterior and cabin model which I can place all this interior work in. If we could achieve that we would have a state-of-the-art, modern glass cockpit aircraft to add to the FlightGear flagship.

While I am quite happy with what we have done here, it would be huge step forward to have a new c172s model containing this work. Even though the interior panel is laid out really close to the c172sp variant, it is still really just a c172p retrofit with panel change that includes a FG1000. I'm in the process of creating fuel injection system logic to replace the carb logic of the c172p. Because we already had a 180 engine and that is what the c172s comes with standard and we recently added a 68 gal integral fuel tank option, we will have everything needed to make this a true 172s except the exterior and interior cabin modeling.

Exciting to learn new variants of the 172! Looks really cool. For now, is it only in the GitHub repository? I hope it will be merged into FGaddon some day!

Technically it will not be in fgaddon, it should end up in fgdata though as another variant of the aircraft that ships with FlightGear.

So we're getting another default / system-wide C172 variant? Awesome! Thanks for this mate :)

Your welcome, thus why I am really pushing for a new 172s model. Until we have that it is just a retrofit and not really the manufactured version. Although for all intents and purposes it should sufficiently mimic the 172s. If we have a stand alone model for it I think I would isolate it completely as a different aircraft than the 172p? But right now it is the same aircraft as the172R with the FG1000 retrofit.

The progression was

172P Lycoming O-320-D2J carb
172Q Cutlass IO-360-L2A carb
172R Lycoming IO-360-L2A fuel injected
172S Lycoming IO-360-L2A fuel injected

If we independently isolate the fuel injection and the carb fed systems we could technically have any of the 4 versions above.
Currently we have a dynamic 172P and 172Q variant. This work adds a variant 172S. All that is needed to add the 172R, is the finished fuel injection system (in progress).

The breakout is that the load from the FG1000 demands that it be a truly separate variant or you really slow down the 172P and 172Q. You don't load the FG1000 at all, it is completely isolated.
The fuel injection 172R wont go to the 172P and 172Q variant though (as in dynamically through the GUI) becasue we will need to isolate the fuel injection and possible the electrical, so we will have yet another variant. But even now, the 172S is not entirely stand alone as it is using everything from the 172P and 172Q variant except a different panel, electrical and soon to be fuel injection system. So there won't be a dynamic GUI option. The 172R will work the same way as it will use much of the 172p. I haven't looked at the electrical of either the 172Q or the 172R, so I don't know where they land in the end.

Very nice work.
Having a good aircraft like that available in different configurations is a huge plus.

Tuning in on this, very nice work!
Steam gauges have their charm, but we have to go with the time.

And thanks for NOT including the "do not touch screens"-badge as in the other sim, so we don't have to see that constant reminder of stupidity ;-)

Well that’s true!

I do have a question about the G1000 gauges. After starting up, the engine parameters do not move at all and the RPM reads nothing. Is this a common bug or something broke in my installation? Thanks very much!

Nope, that is a bug that crept in somewhere, it was working. I'll have to track it down. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

Ah, for now just change to the 160 hp engine and it will pick up the engine stats.

@wlbragg

Do you have a roadmap to implement C172S ?

No, it's already available and mostly working in the development repository. As far as getting it in fgdata, that won't happen until we're finished with it in the dev repository and one of the other developer signs off on it and it gets merged into master and then cut into a new version at some point. Currently we have no hard milestone or date as to when that will happen.

If someone picks up my request to create a new model for us, then it could extend the time frame even more. But as of now one could use it in pretty much any FG version past and including 2019 I would think, Maybe even a couple FG version prior to 2019?
