the positioning of other craft's lights may be more outboard or have different protective lenses so some of the light is directed rearwards... in your picture, move your view around to the side of the craft and see if you see the lights... also, you should be able to see them from in front of the craft if you are far enough back away from the craft...
let's also not forget about some modelers and programmers may be slightly more adept at getting the lights right so they are not overly bright or too far outboard or even too large
i'm not saying that is related to this but i recall my attempts at adding some lights to some craft that don't have them and my initial attempts were very not realistic... that changed over time as i got more used to the coding and what data affected which portion of the items i was working with...
