AIR MANAGER

Postby Robertfm » Fri Nov 15, 2019 11:20 am

I am sure there are those who know what it is. I didn't until I came across it by accident. This to me seems to be the solution to building virtual cockpits and is itself very affordable and as also it's available to most other flight sims not FG. I contacted the company and received this reply:

From a commercial perspective I understand those companies completely. They probably think the same as we. The FG community is small, so the time investment will not pay itself back. With such a small team (only 2 full time), we have to have our priorities. If the FG community would do some kind of Kickstarter for us to develop a plugin (+- €2000) then it would be fine, but I think you'll have a hard time finding enough people bringing together enough money. Especially with a freeware sim...

They have also developed a single knob called Knobster which will interact with any button or dial in the virtual cockpit.

Now it strikes me €2000 between a few members would be a small price to pay for such a great piece of kit , I would certainly be happy to contribute, even though I am a pensioner.

Would anyone else and would our experts be happy to produce a 'Kickstarter' whatever that is, but I am sure they will know.

Maybe Air Manager will be more friendly to developers than Logitech. Since you contacted them already, ask them if they would provide interface docs for their product. I'm not certain you are aware of this, but I have several devices I built and designed the interface for FG. If their product uses UDP, the interface may be easier than you think (well, than I think). Even USB is ok with me too.

Edit: I contacted Logitech for any developer docs for the Flight panels, but I have not heard anything from them yet. Not sure if I will. Their support is mostly to placate users, not help.

This is really true :( But if You want spend 2000 EURs for home made cockpit (probably much more for Bus or Boeing), 200 EUR for payware sim is not terroristic price. Or You can use smart solution - payware sim and desktop cockpit :

It is still cheaper than home made for FG.

I am sure you are right but does any of that kit work with FG out of the box. As for the €2000 if it was divided amongst a few members £20 x 100 would give the money. Then each individual buys Air Manager.

Did you do as I suggested? I'll help, but I'm not doing your homework.

Still haven't heard from Logitech.

Thank you. Let me know. I'll do the same with Logitech. Maybe we can get something done with at least one company.

I hope I don't get the canned response from Logitech, which is: "It's not a bug. It's a feature!"

Hey, I got a different answer from Logitech. I asked for docs to interface with their product and the tech rep said "NO WAY!"
Thank you very much for your interest in our products, Tim. However, we are afraid we will not be able to provide you with these proprietary information.

From what I understand, you can use their panels only if you use Windows. I use the Ubuntu version of X-Plane. Sorry, no radio/switch panel for me.

Creating 2D panels is hardly going to be "the solution" to building virtual cockpits - for reference, this is a 2D panel:

While this is a virtual cockpit:

The £2000 would be better served in hiring professional texture artists and modellers to do various projects... that is certainly one aspect that is lacking!

Surely being able to have a touch screen panel or a mouse activated standard monitor where all the latest kit can be built in at an affordable price (€65) + Knobster at €90 then no need to spend hundreds of pounds on panels that won't work anyway.

@Robertfm, what do you mean by "won't work anyway"?

What I mean is most third party hardware are not designed to work with FG, this has been well documented on these forums.

How realistic are you requesting?
I have the electronics part of it. The basic programming is complete. I have the nav radios working.
I'm using a white on blue 4X20 LCD. There is a red on black available. but more expensive.
Bad blurry pic, but you should get the idea.
