Yoke Behaviour

Let me just say this doesn't happen all the time but when I let go of the Yoke it drops into '0' axis ( I check through the calibrator, but the plane will dive, even when I have been on level flight. Is it a fault with the Yoke or something else.

What or which aircraft does it happen with?

As I said it's random, I don't think it is plane specific. It seems at times it just wants to dive when the Yoke is showing as level in calibration

You need to trim. The aircraft doesn't stay where you put it until you trim for the current speed/config. That is correct.

High Josh,
In essence that is the issue. I can't get the yoke into a neutral position too trim. I can hold the yoke and trim and it stays there bu the yoke won't be in the neutral position so any inadvertent forward press on the yoke, as it's not at rest, will cause plane to dive.

Could it be a lack of dead zone or should I adjust the internal Pots to alter the actual rest position.

When on auto pilot the yoke is at rest. When I unselect Pitch control/altitude the plane doesn't dive.

Then you're still not trimming correctly.

In a real aircraft, what you'd normally do is something like this:

1. Maneuver the aircraft into level flight
2. Wait until vertical speed and airspeed are stable
3. Turn the trim wheel such that there is no force on the yoke anymore

You still won't get a perfect "hands off" trim, but if you do it right, the aircraft should not make any drastic pitch changes when you release the yoke.

Most FG aircraft models will automatically trim for you when the autopilot is on (just like the real counterparts), so if you fly level, activate autopilot, wait a while, and then turn the autopilot off again, the aircraft will be trimmed correctly for the current altitude and speed, so that would explain why you don't experience a dive after using the autopilot.

I am not sure I follow, but if I understand correctly you say that you move the yoke to a neutral position and then try to trim the aircraft. Usually one try to hold attitude while trimming, moving the yoke/joystick towards the neutral position while trimming for it. In essence trimming is just as much about not having apply so much force to the yoke, joystick or pedals as it is about keeping the aircraft at a certain attitude.

While talking about trimming, the mnemonic, PAT-REA, in that order, might be useful at some point later:

  1. Power
  2. Attitude
  3. Trim
    1. Rudder
    2. Elevator
    3. Aileron

Thank you I understand the process of trimming, however if I can't get Yoke elevator in 0 degree/centralise position in any other flight position but dive as I understand it you don't trim until you are stable. I can't get stable when this happens. Other times it's fine.

Try calibrate Your yoke via Windows Devices control panel.

Is that different to joy.cpl. Just checked and it is the same tool. The functions and settings are fine.

tdammers, that isn't accurate.
Very few aircraft autotrim when A/P is on for you. There are a handful of GA that do. Airliner wise, only the IT-AUTOFLIGHT System and deratives autotrim AFAIK.

The rest of the craft either have no autotrim, or for some reason I really don't understand bound their A/P pitch axis onto elevator trim - which is a joke and should never be done. Plus, it could leave trim in a really bad position on disconnect.
