Scenery download

Postby Panther1534 » Sun Apr 07, 2019 8:16 am

Ever since I've got flight gear I manually downloaded scenery however this can sometimes be a pain and I'm hoping to automatically download scenery however when I enable it flight gear takes hours to load and so far I haven't got it working. Please help me.

Hi,
You can use TerraMaster to predosnload scenery - http://wiki.flightgear.org/TerraMaster

When you enable automatic scenery download, what happens - does it not show the progress (X of X kilobytes) in the bottom right?

FWIW: the reason it takes so long to download the scenery is because FG has to check, calculate, and validate the checksums for all the files in the terrasync scenery directory... once it has them all checked and validated, it should be faster...

there are over a million files in all of the world scenery for FG to deal with... it doesn't have to do all of the files but it will check the ones you already have for the location you are in as long as they are properly placed in the terrasync directory tree... if you have the scenery in a different directory than where FG automatically puts it, then it will have to download the files again... files that you may have in your terrasync directory tree that are not on the servers will be removed and those you do not have will be downloaded...

at the time of this post, there are currently:
46464 subdirectories containing
1833479 files totaling
90.1 GiB (96700487102 bytes)
in the terrasync base directory... this includes all of the Airports, Buildings, Models, Objects, Pylons, Roads, and Terrain directories...
"You get more air close to the ground," said Angalo. "I read that in a book. You get lots of air low down, and not much when you go up."
"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."

there's no reason to remove it and have it downloaded again... if it is in the proper directory, terrasync and other scenery management tools will use and update it... if it is in a different directory than the terrasync directory it is custom/private scenery... custom/private scenery is used along with the scenery that terrasync downloads... the terrasync download and maintenance functions still have to be performed when terrasync is enabled...

Im having difficulty downloading terra master, specifically with the second step 2.)Create a shortcut or script that runs java -jar terramaster.jar. Aswell as this when I don't use Terra Master it does not say the kb in the bottom right corner, it only says downloading scenery.

You don't need to do that - you only need to double click the icon just like any other program.

After trying to download from terra master ive got an error message saying there where errors in DNS querirs. Consider enabling 8.8.8.8 or 9.9.9.9 in settings. I dont understand what that means.

I made a new folder in Documents/FlightGear called TerraSync-b and added that to $FG_SCENERY on the addons tab of the launcher.

As for DNS,

Ive followed the instructions saying "Sync can fail if Java older than 8u101 and 7u111 with HTTPS hosts" its followed by some links about UK mirror FG scenery. Does it want me to update Java?

The links about UK mirror FG scenery... not quite sure, I think that means it was successsful - did the tiles turn green?

But I would update java if possible, anyway.

Ive updated Java, currently waiting to see if it downloads, also the last download wasn't successfully, I got this message with a lot of code basically saying I didn't download anything, but this time no Java message, now that I think ive got it working I just have to wait and see. Every problem we fix seems to uncover another one. Edit - Finally its downloading, its on 1% which is an acheivment considering it wouldn't get past 0 without an error message. Other edit because I forgot to type this: I had ot enable 8.8.8.8 and 9.9.9.9 for it to work

Probably an outdated question, but I simply haven't found it in the forum:

What is the difference between "http" and "ws20" in Terramaster?

I get all scenery I need by an old terramaster version where I can choose between http and svn. If I use the current version, the only possible scenery source is "ws20" and my downloads are slow and incomplete.

Should I stick to the old version because it works? Does it give me current or older scenery?
