No metar available [solved]

Postby sanni » Sat Jan 05, 2019 9:49 pm

When I start FG, this message alway appears:
Code: Select all
No metar available

Starting metar in the cli shows this:
Code: Select all
metar -c -vvv ksfo
metar download failed: http://tgftp.nws.noaa.gov/data/observations/metar/stations/KSFO.TXT (6 Couldn't resolve host name)

What can I do to get metar info?

Do you realy mean the hppt protocol ??? Sorry, i don't know this protocol, but i guess you mean the http protocol!
Sorry, if i'm wrong.

EDIT:
The propgram 'metar' has a problem with more than one short option behind a dash.
Code: Select all
$metar -vc ksfo
metar download failed: http://tgftp.nws.noaa.gov/data/observations/metar/stations/-VC.TXT (404 Not Found)

You must write every option alone.
Code: Select all
$metar -v -c ksfo
Proxy host: ''
Proxy port: '80'

Ooops, thats a typo.... I'm soooo sorry! Now, it's corrected.

Don't forget the FG-message.
Even if I try metar without the options I get an error message:
Code: Select all
ERROR: metar download failed
I failed the Turing test

Could be just a server outage - it worked earlier today - can anyone else see this?

it is working here... the "-vc" is broken as reported but "-v -c" works fine...

metar download failed: http://tgftp.nws.noaa.gov/data/observations/metar/stations/-VC.TXT (404 Not Found)

FWIW: when i was testing the other day, i found that metar's ability to read and process a metar line on the command line is broken, too... it still tries to download when it should not...

@sanni: glad you found the problem and got it fixed :)

I don't have that "metar" cli tool, where do I get it?

I have installed FG from the official repositories of Debian and they include it.
How have you installed FG?

ok, so now I have the metar CLI utility, but it still does not work right. Looks to me as if the URL should start with https by now... Is there a compile flag for that, or do I have to patch it?

Thats correct. 'noaa.gov' has changed the protocol to https.

There isn't a compile flag. For 'https' the tool must be build with 'ssl' support, but the actual version havn't this support.
As far as I know, there should be a new version shortly. The developers are working on that problem.

I built a flightgear package using this diff:

https://build.opensuse.org/package/view ... f?expand=1

and now I have metar weather data again.

by the way,. whoever made the original package on OBS thought that quite a few tools that come with FG were obsolete, and should be removed from the package:

Code: Select all
# remove obsolete utilities
# cd %{buildroot}%{_bindir} && rm -f GPSsmooth MIDGsmooth UGsmooth metar yasim yasim-proptest

Any thoughts on that?

Cheers

No. Absolutely not. But you can write an email to the maintainers of the rpm package and ask.
