When I add an object, I usually start from google maps to have a rough idea where to place it and get the orientation from the map,

Why? the scene models map is a valid map already. The only use i can find for google maps is to compare satellite data, sometimes objects that have an icon in scene models are not there in real life.

Also to convert from STG to true (and I have no idea why this was coded like that) you need one of these (or similar)

Again, I should have been more precise...

I use both maps. As you said, they complement each other really well for satellite (google) vs location element (scene model maps).

BTW, I tried the UFO method of adding objects, but my issue is that I did not find how to configure the UFO to use my "terrasync" directory of downloaded elements instead of the default FG install directory, as this one is outdated. I'm on linux if it can help...

Maybe someone has an idea?

I'm not sure I understand the protractor reference? If I want precise angle (true), I can screenshot whichever map I'm using and get the angle from Inkscape (or any other graphing tool). I guess as they say "it's whatever floats your boat"? :D
