navion adf and compass cards

Postby dilbert » Thu Jan 03, 2019 2:58 pm

cards don't turn, as they once did.

On investigation found rotation used the same rotation property as the one causing problem in Aermacchi 339.

>AD>FK T227.card uses <property>instrumentation/heading-indicator/indicated-heading-degree</property>for card rotation.

This indicates that the problem lies with the property in FG, not the individual aircraft.. :(

You dont say the aircraft. But you can test if the compassrose rotate if you set '/engines/engine/rpm' to '2500' or more.
This activate the suction pump and the suction drive the gyro.

Thank you. Will give it a try. When started Navion just now, engine wouldn't develop more than 2000 RPM at full throttle, which seems to low. Best Regards

P.S. Confess am a bit lost. Could you tell me in which directory I would find engines/engine/rpm :? Thanks

i think he's talking about the properties in the property tree... not files on the HD ;)
"You get more air close to the ground," said Angalo. "I read that in a book. You get lots of air low down, and not much when you go up."
"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."

Ooops, sorry, yes, i mean the property.
If it doesn't help, say us what aircraft you are try to fly.

It's the Navion. Compass and ADF cards rotated when I last flew it, some time ago; now they don't. Ran into similar problem with the Aermacchi MB 339, which used the same property as the Navion for card rotation, namely:

<property>instrumentation/heading-indicator/indicated-heading-degree</property>.

What has changed, to cause this property to no longer work ?

Did the property itself change, or did another change in FG somehow make it incompatible?

Kind Regards

Okay, i will look into the aircraft at the weekend.

It works in most other aircraft, most likely the underlying system, probably gyro, I'm not entirely certain, wasn't added properly to the aircraft?

I have now a quick look and suction is there, electric is there ... so it doesn't matter if it is a suction driven gyro or electric driven. Both systems are working.
Will have a deeper look at weekend.

Well, it may not be the right fix, but as with the Aermacchi 339B, changing the rotation property for each of the three Ryan Navion cards from "instrumentation/heading-indicator/indicated heading-deg" to
"orientation/heading-magnetic-degree" made each rotate.

The instruments were in Ryan-Navion>Models>Interior>Panel>Instruments>

They are identified as Hi, KI252A, and KR-87 ADF>ki227-01.

Strictly from a user standpoint, this seems to restore functionality of card; however, the radio navigation functions still don't work (regardless of whether card rotation has been changed or not.). :(

Kind Regards :)

P.S. WoodSTokk mentioned the low engine RPM. The current property "engines/engine/rpm=2082.35" is low, which explains the FG Ryan Navion's only attaining 2000 at full throttle and its poor rate of climb.

P.P.S. Just noticed in Ryan Navion-yasim that whereas under <propeller.. take-off-rpm="2600"
and take-off-power="280"; In <piston-engine compression...engine-power="205". Fishy.
Looks like "205" could have been a typo where "285" was intended. Will check it out.

Aah. Might be wrong fix; but it worked-now get 2400rpm on deck with full throttle, and around 2350 on climb out with full throttle-much better. :)

Navion is an excellent, well developed model; and I really enjoy flying it. :)

Neither /instrumentation/heading-indicator/indicated-heading-deg/ nor
/instrumentation/heading-indicator/offset-degree/ work, which seems to indicate the problem is with
/instrumentation/heading-indicator/ directory in general.

All properties under /instrumentation/heading-indicator/ are not working, as you sayed.
So I had a assumption and it was correct.
The heading-indicator was not included in the instruments.

Go in the directory of the aircraft (normaly 'Aircraft/org.flightgear.fgaddon/Aircraft/Ryan-Navion/').
In the subdirectory 'Systems' you will find the 'instrumentation.xml' file.
Add the following line to that file (must be inside the '<PropertyList>'):
Code: Select all
  <heading-indicator>
    <name>heading-indicator</name>
    <number>0</number>
    <suction>/systems/vacuum/suction-inhg</suction>
  </heading-indicator>

This bring the compass card to life.
But there is another problem with the nav and adf radio.
The pointer doesn't react, but you have at least a working compass now.
Will look the radios later this week.

If I might inject a concern into this thread...

>AD>FK T227.card uses <property>instrumentation/heading-indicator/indicated-heading-degree</property>for card rotation.

This indicates that the problem lies with the property in FG, not the individual aircraft.. :(

Why are we not trying to determine what happed to the properties here, especially if they used to work VS finding a work around? Is this a jsbsim property that was incorrectly used originally or did something happen recently that caused it to no longer work? It is a valid property in a jsbsim aircraft. The c172p is using it.

That was my bad-using a work around. WoodSTokk rightly figured it was an implementation problem: it was not in the
Systems instrumentation.xml file as part of the property list. It had been a long time since I flew the Navion; and while I don't recall this being an earlier problem, it may have been there from the gitgo. :)

P.S Just installed correct fix supplied by WoodSTokk; and it did solve the card non-rotation problem.
