Using WED

Postby rleibner » Wed Dec 05, 2018 4:11 pm

Hi,
I'm trying to update my local airport (SUMU) using WED.
I've deleted Rwy 10/28 (it is no longer serviceable since many years ago), modified some taxiways, platform, etc.
The work is not finished but it looks pretty well ... from the WED screen.

I've exported the .dat and merged its lines into the original $FG_ROOT/Airports/apt.dat
From the FGFS launcher the SUMU location looks fine: only 2 rwys, as the 10/28 was deleted.
But once the scenery is loaded ... the old airport appears, rwy 10/28 included !! :shock:

What am I missing ?
Rodolfo

You need to run TerraGear to turn the airport layout into usable scenery: http://wiki.flightgear.org/Using_TerraGear
The launcher merely shows the data, not the actual scenery that you see in sim.

I run:
Code: Select all
$ download_and_compile.sh TERRAGEAR

and compilation_log.txt reads as follows:
Code: Select all
./download_and_compile.sh TERRAGEAR
VERSION=$Id
APT_GET_UPDATE=y
DOWNLOAD_PACKAGES=y
COMPILE=y
RECONFIGURE=y
DOWNLOAD=y
JOPTION=
OOPTION=
BUILD_TYPE=RelWithDebInfo
DIRECTORY=/home/rodolfo/TerraGear
***********************************

However I dont find the executable anywhere ( $ which terragear returns nothing !)

Any clue?
Rodolfo

That's not a complete log of the build process.

I guess it'll be quicker for him to use TGWeb : http://ns334561.ip-5-196-65.eu/tgweb/

Great ! Airport Web Generator is an useful tool. I have now my new SUMU.btg.gz

I've replaced that file into my ..../myScenery/Terrain/w60s40/w057s35 folder.
But in the FGFS session, the old airport is still there :roll:

(Note that the WED verification was OK and the Export apt.dat gave no errors.)

EDITED: SOLVED !! I dont know why, FGFS was taking the old SUMU from $FG-HOME/TerraSync (although the one in myScenery is newer and I disabled the "downloads" on the launcher)

IIRC, the scenery is combined from the various directories it finds matching content for the tiles in... since you had the "download scenery" option enabled, it found the tiles in both places and combined all the objects into the scene displayed on the screen... there is no time check on the files so there is no "using the newest scenery files" capability...

HINT: many of us manually add our terrasync directory to the scenery paths so we can use our terrasync scenery when we do not have the download option enabled... this allows us to maintain our terrasync scenery with a 3rd party tool like TerraMaster or terrasync.py or similar...

NOTE: custom craft are not combined like the scenery is but it is possible that a custom craft will use code from another copy of that craft if the custom one is not coded properly to use only the custom craft's directory...

"Why not?" said Gurder.

understood thanks.
Now I'm dealing with Parking points and Taxi Networks (both for AI traffic). Does it make sense to do it with WED? or in FGFS we must do it in a different way?
Same question for WED's Traffic Flow and Trunk Networks.

for taxiways for AI craft, you have to use taxidraw but it is old and hasn't been updated in a while... the 810 or 850 (i forget which) format of apt.dat is the latest supported... this is almost in line with FG which currently carries the 1000 format of apt.dat... converting apt.dat formats is not easy... at least, i've not found an easy way and i started to write code to convert it after spending some hours trying to do it manually... then i thought it would be better to update taxidraw to work with the 1000 format but that needs C skills better than mine... once done, though, working with the newer apt.dat formats greater than 1000 should be a little easier... my work on this was put on extended hold due to a personal family tragedy back in august 2018...

Re: Using WED

I am developing a python tool to generate a ICAO.groundnet.xml from the earth.wed.xml
But reading some existing FGFS .groundnet.xml examples, I saw they uses a WED's terminology, p.ex.:
Code: Select all
  ...
 <parkingList>
        <Parking index="0" type="gate" name="New_Ramp_Start_7" ... />
       ...

So, I though may be I'm re-inventing the wheel ...
