Creating a Low Poly Aircraft Model

Postby pb321 » Fri Dec 21, 2018 4:23 am

I need three low poly aircraft models to position at airports I've been modeling over the past two years. However, I've never modeled any aircraft. Today I loaded FlightGear's B-25 Mitchell (.ac file only) and placed it with a building I'm working on, as that model is actually positioned at a corner of that building. The resulting .ac file is over 30 Mb!! I tried using Blender's Decimate modifier to eliminate faces but so far without success. Any help/suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Elements of that model are quite complex for a static model(edit:even for a normal model , the new IDG A320 is below 30MB in blender)
Reducing complexity must be done by hand(dissolving edges, for example on the wheels)

Is this the only model you require?

I've been down that route with AI models and found it was far easier to create a low poly model from scratch.

I found this tutorial on creating a low poly aircraft model that looks promising: https://www.fsdeveloper.com/forum/threads/blender-creating-a-low-polygon-airplane-tutorial-bij-karan-shah.440892/
Think I'll get the building (parking garage) in place without the B-25, then terminals and jetways, then add the plane another day, once I figure it out.
If it makes any difference to your recommended approach to this, I looked again this morning and the .ac file is 4.8 MB, much more reasonable. I don't know what I was looking at yesterday.
Might do one of the other planes first, as they may be easier to do. Then again, FG low poly models may already exist for them, I haven't looked yet.
Thank you , CaptB and Gooneybird, for your advice.
