FSWeekend 2018

Postby stuart » Thu Sep 27, 2018 5:43 pm

Hi All,

Each year, a number of FlightGear people get together to display FlightGear at FSWeekend (http://fsweekend.com/en/home/) at the Aviodrome (https://www.aviodrome.nl/ in The Netherlands.

This year we will be demonstrating a number of different exhibits:
  • James will be bringing his 737 cockpit, which includes a pilot side panel and central console.
  • Isaac and myself are building a Lockheed Super Constellation cockpit with 7 (or more!) screen. We've created a simple scenario where visitors will be able to land the Connie at Lelystad airport, where Aviodrome is located. Our booth will be located underneath the Aviodrom's own Super Constellation, so visitors can relate directly to what they are doing!
  • Michael will be demonstrating ATC-pie, and we will run a couple of longer demonstrations with both the 737 and Connie under ATC control.
  • Finally, Durk may be doing some talks about FlightGear within a 747!

We will obviously evangelizing FlightGear to encourage visitors to download it and try it out!

It promises to be a great weekend at a fascinating aviation museum. We would encourage anyone in the area to come along and say hello!

Those of us that will probably never make it to an event like this really enjoy hearing about the event afterward and would appreciate many pictures and stories if possible.

Have a fun, safe trip.

Really looking forward to it!

@StuartC: Last year we demonstrated a helicopter flight in the Grand Canyon in the big theatre (with the biggest projection screen of the Netherlands: 18 x 13 meters!). As we have quite a few setups, visitors that are interested will surely have a chance at flying a helicopter. We didn't plan a demonstration yet, as we 're already having much ambition with the current projects, but there will be a few prints of screenshots of the month with helicopters, so people with helicopter interest will have the chance to try and get more information.

If there is any need for an updated osm2city scenery, then please PM me. I am planning to do a scenery in due time for Hawaii, which will feature the fact that I now have BTG files working and can place plausible building in places, where there is neither building nor land-use data in OSM - which happens to be the case a lot in Hawaii.

I will come relatively late on Saturday afternoon and hope to get a seat at the dinner with the rest of the crowd. Gijs and I coordinate to have an osm2city scenery around Lelystad ready for the event.

Hi Rick,

It will be great to see you again, and I look forward to the osm2city scenery around Lelystad.

I'm currently working on the Connie cockpit - I'm hoping to post some photos later today.

I guess it would be cool to share what's going on there through the FG Instagram account. Anyone with a bit of knowledge with it attending Fsweekend willing to help?

Here's a photo of the Lockheed Super Constellation cockpit and James, who came around at the weekend to help with the carpentry.

"You get more air close to the ground," said Angalo. "I read that in a book. You get lots of air low down, and not much when you go up."
"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."

Whether the picture is upside down or not, I'm sure the kiosk won't be upside down luckily :)

Yesterday I 've built the third pc that will drive the Connie's screens (8 screens + a projector in total). Original plan was 2 pc's driving the screens, but since we want visitors outside the kiosk to see from an external eyepoint what the pilot in the kiosk is doing, I built an extra pc to provide the outside viewpoints both on a screen and (eventually) a projector. I 've already coded most of her joystick bindings so that we can offer as much realism as possible and am really looking forward to seeing this all come together on the evening before FSweekend! Getting a bit nervous now as we really are taking some big risks here, but I 'm quite sure we 'll make it happen!
