IDG-A32X Approach Quiery

Postby Ivan-Pekar » Wed Sep 19, 2018 5:11 pm

Hello,
I am unsure about the ILS landing on the A320neo (IDG-A32X). I select LS, LOC and APP, they become armed, but not active. Not matter how long I wait, or how much I descend or where I am, they remain armed but not active. Could someone please give a set of instructions on how to do the ILS landing on this aircraft, and how to get LOC and APP to be active.

Thanks,
Ivan

Hello,
First, please ensure you enter the radio frequency in the MCDU RAD NAV page ILS field - not the F12 menu. Then, press LS. Next, navigate yourself to a position where you are on an intercept course to the localiser (usually 30 degrees offset), and press LOC. Once you intercept the localiser (you must be in range of the ILS (i.e. within the "cone" on the FlightGear map) press APPR - once the aircraft meets the glideslope it will engage GS mode and start to descend.

Thank you!
However, I have one other question, what do you mean by 'meet the glideslope'? What altitude do I have to be at to meet the GS?

Thanks,
Ivan

Hi Ivan,
The Glideslope does get captured once the G/S diamond gets near the center on the PFD. You need to switch the ILS button on to see them.

Note that if you are too far away, the signal will not be strong enough, and you won't see the diamonds. Once you are close enough, and the diamonds are visible, then the AP will be able to see them also.

You should generally be below the glideslope, so diamond above you when you intercept.

Kind Regards,
Josh

Before the G/S you should flying level at about 2000ft. The airspeed should be approach speed, and a suitable flaps setting. The airspeed is normally reduced to landing speed as you descend, and flap angle increased accordingly. The precise speeds and flap settings depend upon the aircraft.

Thank you Josh and Alan.
So where is the ILS button that I need to press?
Here is a video of my approach. I can see the purple diamonds, I am very close to the airport, at correct speed and with correct flap settings. Why haven't LOC and G/S been switched to active?

Hi Ivan.
LOC will become active once the LOC diamond starts to move in to the center. G/S will become active when it comes closer. You should look on the charts for the intercept altitude, and go on a 30-degree intecept to the ILS. If you don't know the altitude, maybe do 3000 or so, should be fine if the airport is not too high up. Once you get close enough, the G/S diamond will start to come down, and it will capture.

I strongly suggest you to follow this video:

Thank you very much, Josh. I will try my best with learning how to do the ILS approach. The video was very helpful as well.

Thanks,
Ivan
