Landing The Rockwell B-1B Lancer

Postby alba-69 » Thu Jul 19, 2018 4:25 pm

Hi all.

Has anyone got a landing checklist for the B-1B Lancer for any tips on how to land it? The nose just seems to dive towards the ground when it gets down to about 170 knots.

Sounds like you have too much fuel, drop the fuel to about 15-20% (30-40K lbs) turn FCGMS on and set to about 40% MAC.
That should allow a touch down at about 160kts with full flap, using spoilers if needed.
You can also mitigate against the nose dive by adding nose up trim on approach.

When full the B-1 is bloody heavy, it doesn't get off the ground until 180kt and is a slug up until 220-240. Landing with a high% load of fuel requires a higher landing speed.

Most heavies have a base approach landing speed based on a nominal fuel qty e.g. 160kt @ 30Klbs, and add a given no. of kts for every 1000lb over the base figure i.e +3kts/1000lb, so at 35Klbs you land at 175kt. They will usually have a max landing wt factoring airframe, fuel, and stores/cargo.
