Multiplay: c172p at night with dim nav lights

Postby benih » Thu Jun 21, 2018 9:06 pm

Hello,
today i tried (local LAN) multiplayer with two cessnas at night, but i was barely able to see the other plane.
The lights where so dim that i could only see the plane when i was really close (say about 100m) (but it was there and visible with zoom when paused both clients).
Also, no flash could be seen, despite the strobe being activated.

What am i doing wrong?

did you have both of your FGs set to use the same MP protocol? which protocol are/were you using?
"You get more air close to the ground," said Angalo. "I read that in a book. You get lots of air low down, and not much when you go up."
"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."

I used just the --multiplay=in,.... and --multiplay=out,.... command line option pairs.

Thanks benih for the report!

You are correct, they need some work. Not only that but the interior lighting is not implemented in multiplayer mode at all. I'll add the issue to the development repository. It's probably going to be farther down the development list than you might hope for. We are planning on refactoring the multiplayer functionality to take advantage of the recent upgrades made to that environment. This would be an issue that would be tackled at that time.

Ah, so this is "correct behavior" and nothing on my end.
Thanks for pointing that out!

Is there any way i can "highligt" my plane to the other client in the meantime (besides using the map)? I plan to conduct some flíghts with my son and it would be very hard to find each other without any further help. Something like writing callsigns above the plane comes to mind...

in the F10 menu, go to the "Cessna C172P" menu... then select the liveries and choose one of the "Custom Callsign" ones... then also in the c172p menu, select "Registration", put your callsign in the field, and hit the [APPLY] button... your callsign will appear on the craft's dashboard as well as on the fuselage and bottom of the right wing...

I know callsigns, thank you.
The problem is locating the other clients plane , not identification.
Especially in night condition.

use the F10->Equipment->Map (CTRL-M) maybe? check the "Traffic" box to see other players and AI craft... i use it all the time in "Transparent" mode...

Yes, the map works, but it would be cool to have a visual highlight in the 3D-world to make it easier to spot the plane.

understood... until the MP stuff has been reworked and the lights are working as desired over MP, the map is the best way... i can't see adding game-type stuff (name floating over avatar) to a simulator... it would probably take longer to get that done than to just wait on the MP in the craft to be fixed...

oh! something else you could do for night stuff would be to use the F10->View->Rendering Options->Filter Settings and select the Infrared option... i use it a lot at night... especially when i'm flying along with someone (whether they know i'm there or not)... i have been within 1000ft of other craft with no problem... mostly i tend to stay .5nm up to 1.5nm from them, though...

@benih

I added ALS strobe lights to the development repository version to see if it would scale better in Multi-player and I think there is a noticeable difference.

You can test this for yourself by downloading the dev version at https://github.com/c172p-team/c172p/tree/improve-3d-objects

The use of the ALS rendering scheme is required.

This change should also be available with the next release of FlightGear.
