scenery.flightgear.org currently down

Postby Torsten » Sun Jun 03, 2018 8:42 am

Hi all

the server at https://scenery.flightgear.org/ is currently down for maintenance after detecting some "interesting" activity.
I'll post a note here when it is back online.

What do you mean by "interesting" activity?

most likely hackers, spammers, skiddies, thieves trying to steal the database, etc... it is all ""interesting""... especially when you can catch them in the act...

"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."

From the mailing list messages, it sounds like a DDoS targeting the FlightGear infrastructure. I wonder if the person doing this is also attacking the MP servers?

DDOS is just one weapon available to hide infiltration attempts... from an infosec standpoint, i'm kinda curious about the DDOS traffic... is it slowloris or similar, URL requests, a reflection amplification attack or something else...

It is back online. There will be another (hopefully much shorter) outage when I move the service to AWS.
I'll post a message before this happens.

Thanks for your patience and sorry for the long downtime.
