Is this laptop?

Postby jestepp65 » Wed Oct 04, 2017 11:04 am

Is this laptop going to run flightgear good? I get paid this week and am looking to buy a computer. I love how this one has 1TB of space. I know 4GB RAM isn't as good as 8GB but i was wandering if this computer will run FlightGear at least 7/10 performance wise. Any replies are greatly appreciated!!!! :D

Integrated graphics chipset

While it is otherwise a great computer, this means that you will be severely performance limited by your graphics card.

The 9420 is a lot weak for FG. Not enough CPU, GPU or RAM.

Personally I'd go for a good condition used system; something like this

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Asus-G74SX-BBK7 ... SwTRFZouH6
or save up and get a new system: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Acer-Aspire-15- ... Sw4CFY5Fz-

GPU is lots faster; http://gpuboss.com/gpus/Radeon-R5-M420- ... e-GTX-660M

CPU is lots faster: https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cp ... Hz&id=1444
https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cp ... 20&id=3059

Normally FG is going to be CPU limited[1] especially with a CPU that is say less that 5k on cpubenchmark. My old system had a mark of 11k and that was CPU limited, except when the LOD ranges were considerably reduced.

Better to get a desktop; but spending money on a low end to run FG is really a waste as you'll either have limited graphics and maybe 20fps, or 5 fps and reasonable graphics. What we in the trade call a false economy.

[1] YMMV

getting a refurbished server with a PCI-Express slot for a modern graphics card is another thing that worked for me a while ago - these have usually plenty of RAM (>=8gb), disk space and several cores (4-16) - typically in the 1-2ghz range each.
Admittedly, that kind of box is not exactly "mobile" obviously.

Here's an outdated wiki article detailing the idea: http://wiki.flightgear.org/Howto:Build_ ... htGear_box

Given that this was 7+ years ago (yikes!), it would be better to look for a dedicated "GPU server" these days

See my spec's (Below) My laptop will run flightgear just fine, just don't expect blistering frame rates, I get on average between 16 and 25 FPS This is running the VERY hardware hungry 777 variants and this is solely dependant on how many "goodies" I run in the shaders etc but it is still very "playable" non the less. Other planes will perform at a much better FPS and 16 to 24 FPS is my worst case scenario! Hope this helps

Just to agree. Avoid integrated graphics card. I have been using HP Pavilion g6 and getting only up to about 10 -20 fps on minimal settings flying the Piper Comanche 250 . I am thinking now if getting MSI. GE62VR. Which has Intel i7. processor and NVIDIA GTX. 1060 . graphics card. Also 16 GB RAM. Does anyone know that I will get decent fps. at high settings? (I don't particularly want to go the desktop route)

That has a great processor and graphics card. Considering I get 30-40fps with a 920MX and i5-7200U, that ought to get 40-50 fps.
This is in no way a guarantee of frame rate, but it should do well.

Be aware that laptop has a poor battery (4 hours).

Thanks. Reassuring. Yes I am aware of poor battery life - I think that all gaming laptops are probably best run plugged in.
I have whole world scenery downloaded, and would have to go through that whole process again when I get a new laptop. Does terrasynch/automatic scenery download slow the frame rate much?. Does this need a super fast Wi-Fi ?
Do you get your 40-50 fps on max settings, or are compromised still needed?

I get 25-35 on max settings except urban shader and random buildings.
40-50 on low settings.

TerraSync doesn't slow fps much but needs good wifi (10Mbps or more probably?)

If necesarry you can pre-download scenery with terramaster: http://wiki.flightgear.org/TerraMaster

thanks, clive... the link in the wiki should point to keith's repo... he an i have both updated the wiki page at different times in the past... i know he's updated it more recently, too...
"You get more air close to the ground," said Angalo. "I read that in a book. You get lots of air low down, and not much when you go up."
"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."
