If it actually works, it merely proves the 747 being used is grossly unrealistic.

The real runway at VNLK is a 15% slope upwards and very narrow, no room to turn around, even if you stick the landing.

Challenge Accepted, Been wanting to do this for a while now, I can see that it would be possible in SIM. However, it would be one hard landing and not all parts would be on the aircraft if FG supported that, but still upright.

Just so i'm clear, I do not need to TO again (turn 747 around and TO). The rules are LAND AND STOP on the runway using a 747 and that's it!?

OK so I did attempt to do it (747-8 Intercontinental), however, after numerous attempts, I have come to this conclusion:

YES! It is possible to land the 747 in a flight simulator at VNLK. HOWEVER, Not in FlightGear currently (not by normal landing/normal aircraft parameters anyway). The reason I say this is due to the runway IRL being sloped for most of its length with two plateaus at either end, in FlightGear this is not the case (at time of writing), in FG we have a mostly flat runway with a little angle change at the end (I do propose someone change this airport to be correct to RL), therefore you don't have gravity to help slow you down like in RL (even though its not a lot, it still helps).

I don't recommend anyone picking this up as a challenge really, unless you have an idea on how to get the 747 stopped (without changes to airport using arrestor wire somehow, as this is cheating I think), because I was able to land it, a few times landing it on the edge and rolling, however even with full reverse thrust and auto MAX, parking brake, holding B myself, it still would not stop in time. Also, remember that it is not just the runway now in FG, there is a tower and a few planes located there. Most the times I crashed was hitting the tower, not the back wall.

Many people have landed the 777 in FG and other sims at VNLK.

Hi,
A320s are possible in FG.
I did land an A320 at VNLK in FlightGear before. But I landed one out of like some 20 crashes and I didn't record that time.
So the proper way of doing that is to stall yourself maintain pitch up (Which is super hard) and wait for yourself to fall on the runway.
I do think 747s are too big as they will just crash...
Regards,
Mars.

What about G-load on landing ? Is there any realistic looking Lukla scenery ? Because default one is very poor.
Very good place for realistic landing skill test is VQPR, rwy 15.

EDIT :
I found my old video :

Not ideal approach, but landing was good.

Just realized that VNLK is Lukla airport. It is not a 747, but the technique of using a parabolic free fall to land should also work, this plane can also do near zero-G right? ;)

Slightly off-topic, but why does it have to be a runway ?

In X-P it is possible :
https://youtu.be/2DFlghK1iuI

Because FG has not realistic Lukla, I tried many times land here with P3D NGXu with Short Field Package and minimum fuel, it is simply impossible to stop before the wall at end of the runway. Then in ActiveSky I modelled 60 kts headwind and I managed to land with exploded tyres.

On the customer's machine I landed here with A319, without cargo, pax and 3% fuel reserve. Touchdown was pretty hard - 490 fpm, but not as hard as this 737 at Paro :

Yes, the normal Lukla scenery is ugly. But there is a nice custom scenery available made by D-ECHO: https://github.com/D-ECHO/Nepal-CustomScenery
I can assist with the installation if you don't have experience with custom scenery.

I have not problem with scenery instalation.
That custom scenery is better than default, but still bad. Trees at runway treshold, sloped apron, etc.

EDIT :
Lukla should looks like here :

With updated NGXu (now better simulates tires explosion after hard braking) I managed to land on this dreaded airport without any weather tweaks.
