Adding aircraft to Flightgear hangar

Postby Dark Lord » Wed Mar 28, 2018 10:42 pm

Hi
I am flying old MiG-21bis. When I downloaded it, ILS wasn't working. I fixed this by copying missing parts of autopilot.xml from f-104.
When I tested, it was working perfectly.
So, now my question is: Is it possible to add this modified MiG-21 to official flightgear hangar so others can download it.
Thanks,
Dark Lord

Yes - usually contributions like this go through the maintainer of the aircraft you're contributing to - so you could e.g. ask on the mailing list whether the person who takes care of the plane on FGAddon is currently around.

If no one steps forward for a while the maintainer can be considered absent, someone else who has commit rights to FGAddon can review the patch and commit it on your behalf.

Generally you can expect to be asked licensing questions (where is the content from,...), though in this particular case where it is a copy from another craft, this doesn't look problematic.

There's also 3rd party development (i.e. planes which reside on other repositories and are not regularly merged to the official hangar - like what PINTO linked) - generally the FG project does not decide upon how things are contributed there, you have to get in touch with the 3rd party hangar admins.

The end goal is to have that repo merged with official hanger - it's based off the original hanger's version, and I have that devs approval to work on it going forward. I just want something more complete before seeking merging.

Okay - then do you happen to know if there is a maintainer other than yourself?

There is not. pjedjav retired, and enrogue did a bit of work on it before I took it over. I’ve had contributions from enrogue, swamp, and kokos45. There is another guy working on a different MiG-21 variant, the Bison I believe, but they are very different planes in real life in everything but the outside shape.

edit: my repo also contains a MiG-21 MF-75, and the goal is to expand into more variants eventually.

edit2: helijah also has a MiG-21bis, but this MiG-21 is based off of FGUK, and has no work from Helijahs plane included.

but this MiG-21 is based off of FGUK

Since FGUK has some non-GPL licensed content and you plan to end up on FGAddon (which would make you the current maintainer) - is there going to be a license issue?

No - this is licensed GPL, and even though its based on FGUK, this is the same source of the one in FGAddon right now. Just FGUK had some other imrpovements.

I went through all file history and purged any questionable content early on in the project, you can see that in my git history.

edit: check this thread for details on its history and development: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=7390

Okay, great - thanks for checking.

Then it would seem the best course of action to gather all contributions on your repository (though in the case of this thread, you probably already have a fixed AP in the first place...)

Yes, actually the A/P and navigation systems are nearly complete (and almost entirely in property rules/jsbsim), probably just some tuning needed in the "dont slam into the ground" autopilot. Had some guidance from it0uchpods while designing and tuning the autopilot systems. Relevant file: https://github.com/l0k1/MiG-21bis/blob/ ... opilot.xml
