Things changed - moved from VATSIM to FG-Multiplay :

SHM wrote:Hi everyone,

Firstly, thanks to all the pilots who flew in the last leg of the World's Challenging Approaches Tour. It was both fun and nerve-racking experience at the same time.
There were some Go Arounds, but everyone seemed to get down on the ground at the end in one piece

Secondly, there will be some important change in this leg of the tour, which will either get me to stop hosting this series or will pave the way for even more fun and exciting set of flights in the series later. As many have probably seen, we lost many pilots to other sims from the clan over the years and there is only a single common network that we can all connect to and that is VATSIM. Probably many have closed the tab at this moment. But to others who are still here thank you! :)
When I joined this community in its group flights back during the USA Tours, it was so much more fun and it slowly came down and down. Now I feel that this a step that will bring the whole community back together in what we loved doing. So, as I said above this time the event will be on VATSIM.

I got PM's from the regular pilots that they won't be coming to VATSIM So this will be the last leg I organise and my final flight in fg-mp.

And the airport we would be flying to this time will be Gibraltar International Airport (LXGB)

SHM wrote:About the Airport:

Gibraltar International Airport or North Front Airport (IATA: GIB, ICAO: LXGB) is the civilian airport that serves the British overseas territory of Gibraltar. The runway is owned by the Ministry of Defence for use by the Royal Air Force as RAF Gibraltar. Civilian operators use the civilian-operated terminal. National Air Traffic Services hold the contract for provision of air navigation services at the airport.

In 2015, the airport handled 444,336 passengers and 408,757 kg of cargo on 4,100 total flights.[2] Winston Churchill Avenue (the main road heading towards the land border with Spain) intersects the airport runway, and consequently has to be closed every time a plane lands or departs. The History Channel programme Most Extreme Airports ranked the airport the fifth most extreme airport in the world.[3] It is exposed to strong cross winds around the rock and across the Bay of Algeciras, making landings in winter particularly uncomfortable.

Monarch Airlines was the largest operator at Gibraltar International, operating flights to Birmingham, London Gatwick, London Luton, Manchester Airport.[4] Both routes were operated by an Airbus A320-200. Monarch entered administration at 4:30am on 2 October 2017, ceasing operations with immediate effect,[5] around a year after rumours of its imminent demise became widespread. EasyJet operates seven weekly flights to London Gatwick operated by Airbus A320 family aircraft, as well as three flights per week to Bristol Airport and two flights a week to Manchester Airport. British Airways also operates nine weekly flights to London Heathrow being operated by an Airbus A320-200. Royal Air Maroc Express also operate twice weekly flights to Tangier Ibn Battouta Airport, which continue onto Casablanca Airport.

Although located in Gibraltar, the airport is also used by people travelling to or from neighbouring parts of southern Spain such as the Costa del Sol or the Campo de Gibraltar.

In the hope that everybody using FG is able to be tolerant and accept that there are always more than one opinion about one thing, I will try to explain why I have problems with this:

First of all I have strong feelings about using third party tools in general. I have been in IT "business" for more than 30 years now and the amount of fraud I saw is incredible and increasing. So up front I felt a strong aversion against VATSIM.
Still I tried to register and -as ever so often these days- this did NOT go well. Even though I switched off my noscript script-blocker in my web browser (which I REALLY hate to do!!), the VATSIM-page complains about JavaScript being turned off. This is usually a sign that the web page checks for advertisement blockers. Now, why would a soooo nice and harmless web page check for ad-blockers? Beats me, but I am out!

Reading the help pages on how to get on VATSIM going on FG did not help reducing my doubts! Being forced to run two .exe on my computer frightens me and my first question would be: Are both of them free and open source? Well I don't know, but if yes, that's good but still the "installation" of the connection aid to VATSIM seems too complicated to me and also too intrusive to my FG installation (replacing config-files and so). If the two .exe are not free and open source: Totally not acceptable to me. Already I am a Linux user and I am quite upset about any SW that does not come with Linux support and has to run on wine.

Now, the semi-pro pilots here might think: Hey what's this hans05 talking about?!? VATSIM is so great that you REALLY should not complain about the little pitfalls on the way to getting it.
Well, I started FG only last year's June, I have no clue why VATSIM would be so great.
If the only reason for using VATSIM is, that one wants to fly with others who do not use FG, again: I am out. No interest.
So maybe somebody could explain to the pilots on the beginner side, why VATSIM is the must have?!

So all of this is just my personal opinion and I totally understand you guys who might have dear friends using other sims than FG and really want to fly with them anyways and you have Google, Facebook, Whatsup and all other accounts and do not mind or even see any of the problems related with that and find VATSIM the most harmless amongst all of them. I bet you will have a lot of fun and I am truly happy for you.

I write this anyway, because I want to give you a hint that there are people like me, and I assume amongst people that use a free and open simulator like FG there are more people like me than amongst people that use closed source sims.
In my opinion it would be good to improve FG and advertise it in a way that all those friends who escaped to other sims come back to use what I find the over all best flight simulator out there (taking privacy protection, type of people using it and many other things into account).

Now, ranting off: I do wish you lots of fun in Gibraltar, go land your planes and feed some monkeys :-)

@hans05:

Really? As a programmer?

So maybe somebody could explain to the pilots on the beginner side, why VATSIM is the must have?!

Maybe compare this http://mpmap02.flightgear.org/
with this http://www.vattastic.com/.

The only way to interact with other pilots/ATC somewhat realistically is using VATSIM.

cheers

The only thing I get from vattastic.com is a "Vattastic is Loading".
I guess that is again the ad-blocker and does not impress me much ;-)

The link actually works :D Thanks!
So I assume the superduper thing about it is the sheer number of participants (really impressive how many planes there are!)?!? Because if I compare the display to

http://mpmap03.flightgear.org/

it is no better (and no worse).

If so, then you guys have a lot of fun there. I personally prefer not so crowded places, but that is again only me 8)

The VatSpy is again only for Windows and wants to install something. Might be harmless, but me no like!
Ohh my gooood, seems that I am too old for this stuff
Or too paranoid
At least too something....

Well, lets see, on FGMP there are currently 16 pilots.

On VATSIM there are currently 556 pilots and 85 controllers. And they are qualified controllers, who had to go through training.

This was last week Thursday:

This is today:

VATSIM is much much better, and its free, and it can be used with FG.

I personally have really appreciated to participate in many FGUK-Flight-Nights:

10 pilots
0 controllers (out of which 0 are trained and 0 are qualified)
0 registrations to foreign web sites
0 installations to my Computer
100% fun :D

I feel that saying "VATSIM IS better than FGMP" is a bit far fetched. You FIND it a lot better, that I totally buy and have nothing against it.
Just _I_ do not find it better. In fact, if VATSIM was the only means of playing MP-FG, I would not play MP with FG.

So we each have our opinion. I hope we can all live with that and tolerate each other.

Again, have fun on VATSIM and in Gibraltar!!

@hans05: you're not the only one with a valid paranoia about installing things just from wherever... as an IT Security Specialist, i'm very tight on what i allow to be carried and installed on the networks i maintain and manage... you are doing just fine over there ;)
"You get more air close to the ground," said Angalo. "I read that in a book. You get lots of air low down, and not much when you go up."
"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."

I wont be hosting anymore and the Gibraltar event will be my last. The World's Challenging Approaches Tour can be organised by someone who is interested in FG-MP. (Preference goes to Israel first since he did a fabulous job with the USA tour ones and if he declines anyone can)

silly to say vatsim is better than FGMP, is just a network, mount a server and keep it online, having one with +500 pilots online is great, practice skills and get in touch with some experienced sim pilots and you dont have that lonely feeling on FGMP but anyways is the same thing. I fly with some people only in FGMP, so i dont think is useless.
