The engine start procedure depends greatly on the aircraft; to change the controls, you will have to dive into various XML files.

Depends on the aircraft obviously - some proficiency with tools like grep will come in handy.

you're asking about how to find and change things... grep is a tool that will find things... each craft is different... there's no formal methodology or template for building a craft so each builder has done their own thing in their own way... there is a small bit of standards to follow but aside from that, it is all pretty freeform in a manner of speaking...
"You get more air close to the ground," said Angalo. "I read that in a book. You get lots of air low down, and not much when you go up."
"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."

grep is a standard tool on linux systems... if you are on winwhatever, you'll have to find and install a grep... but you don't have to have grep... any text search tool should work... probably even the built-in search stuff in winwhatever...

I suppose the bottom line here is that to change things which someone else has coded, you need some basic skills as well - like reading a file, following references to other files and using tools like grep and find (or their Window$ equivalent) to localize where something is.

Under Linux, if you're looking for the text 'autostart' somewhere inside the F-16 folders, you can do this via grep. Under Windows, I simply do not know how it's done - but there's probably instructions/videos in the web which tell you. You need to learn this tool first before you can do what you want to do.
