Best Aircraft

Postby SirPilotOfAviation » Wed Jan 24, 2018 10:17 am

Hi!

I'm rather new to this sim and plan on building a flight sim based off this. Can anyone provide me a list of the best:

GA plane
Short Haul Plane
Long Haul Plane

Thanks!

BTW, before coming here I played a mobile game called Infinite Flight, check it out!

If I'm on Mac, how do I download them?

Download the .zip file. Then extract, rename without "-master", and make sure it is not a folder in a folder. Then, make an "aircraft" folder and put it somewhere, put all your downloaded aircraft in it. Then go to the launcher, and select the "aircraft" folder as an additional aircraft location.

I also like the DR-400 Dauphin as a GA plane (though the other two mentioned are also excellent choices).

The Tu-154b is also an excellent airliner - somewhat older, but providing great detail in graphics and systems modeling (I think these days it also comes with English panels - the first version was kind of hard for non-Russian readers...)

Can you download scenery for FlightGear from other websites?

It's probably best to get it all using TerraMaster from TerraSync, as that has the best quality terrain. There are other alternative sceneries (terraGit for example), but they are a) not supported on these forums and b) have many elevation issues. The benefit of using terraGit, is more updated airports, but most major airports in TerraSync have the latest layouts. See http://wiki.flightgear.org/TerraMaster and http://wiki.flightgear.org/TerraSync

You can of course use TerraSync without TerraMaster, but TerraSync on its own needs a very stable, fast internet connection if you are moving fast (400 knots true airspeed?) --> TerraMaster allows you to predownload it.

There's also small patches of custom scenery people have created (i.e. not covering the whole world). Usually 3rd party scenery works fine, but there have been a few odd crashes traced to scenery flaws - so if you're experiencing problems after installing a 3rd party scenery, revert back to official scenery before reporting problems please.

Wait is TerraSync and TerraMaster from devs. If not, what’s the difference from default scenery?

See:

TerraSync, TerraGear and the official scenery are provided by the FlightGear project, while TerraMaster is 3rd party software.

TerraSync: used to download on the fly, doesn't work for everyone, you need a good internet connection, and it may load in too late. Therefore, I do not recommend this.
TerraMaster: a way to download the same scenery in TerraSync, however before you fly (features a nice globe map where you can select what you want).
World Scenery: download 10x10 tiles, and install before flight, this is also the same scenery as in TerraSync.
TerraGit: newer scenery than TerraSync, BUT elevation bugs in quite a few places (looks bad, doesn't interfere with flight). TerraGit does feature some airports which look better, BUT on some places there is a lot of static aircraft, and TerraGit adds weird parking lines on each stand, which can look weird with the actuall scenery used (aswell as they add jetway heads, which look weird aswell). (This scenery is not part of the official FlightGear project, but part of the FGmembers hangar/thing). TerraGit is download via GIT.
Single airport/region: various smaller scenery can be found in third part hangars, which look better than the default one in TerraSync or TerraGit.

Conclusion: If you want the best of everything, take the normal TerraSync scenery, then add the airports from TerraGit/third party hangars.

However, be advised that FG scenery is nowhere on par with the current industry standard, thus don't be dissapointed.

Yeah, I know, after all, this is free.

Okay thanks, will take a look.
I’m a beginner to FG, can you explain how to put TerraGit Airports into FG?

DR-400 Dauphin has my vote. Stable. Fun to fly. Added a Hobbs meter and my own livery.

@SirPilotOfAviation I won't be impartial on this one, but do check out the Cessna 172P and Cessna 182S, links:

https://github.com/c172p-team/c172p-detailed/
https://github.com/HHS81/c182s/

The first link is for the development repository of the c172p which includes more up-to-date fixes and many new features when compared to the default one in the launcher (we normally merge our repository back into FGData only before a new release).
