It defaults to 100 miles because the decision for the range is left up to the model itself, and varies according to terrain and altitude. It may be realistic to have a 300 mile range at 30,000 ft, but somewhat unlikely to actually be conversing across that distance unless "Center" is in the middle and you and another pilot are at opposite ends.

If you any another pilot are set to similar ranges, you'll be able to see each other for a longer distance, but by default the visibility limit is enforced on the far side. So if you are configured for 100 miles and I am configured for 350 miles, I will see you when the distance between us is less than 350 miles, but I won't be able to talk to you until I am within 100 miles of you.
I speak only for myself.
