Next Step after Cessna 172P

Postby Ron Swerdfeger » Mon Dec 11, 2017 10:44 pm

As a "Novice" FG pilot, I have been flying the Cessna 172P. I'm totally unfamiliar with other makes and models of aircraft, so my question is..........

What would be my next steps, I'm looking for another easy to fly aircraft (a propeller and a jet) that has the "start with engine running" feature and is "ready to fly" on runway as FG is started, so all I need to do is apply throttle and take off down the runway? (btw I'm just using the keyboard to fly)

Thanks in advance for your assistance!

yep, i think i did the citation and the b1900d after i did the c172p... there were others, too, but certainly those...

FWIW: while i do have a joystick, i mostly still fly with the keyboard ;)
"You get more air close to the ground," said Angalo. "I read that in a book. You get lots of air low down, and not much when you go up."
"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."

The Airbus A3xx that Josh linked are good models, make sure you have the latest as development is rapid on these craft.

Obviously I'm going to recommend either the F-15, or the F-14 that should are available in the launcher.

The F-15 is probably easier to fly, but generally best to read the documentation (linked above). Both have a quickstart (on the F-14 or F-15 menu), and both can be started from cold and dark using the correct procedures, although with the F-14 you will need an external air source (F-14 menu -> Ground Services);

Try the Aerostar 700 from Patten's hangar! It's an awesome aircraft and flies very well.

Guilty....

I should mention also that my Airbus' have full panels states which be loaded at the click of a button,

Cold and Dark
Ready for Engine Start
Ready for Taxi
Ready for Takeoff

The DHC-6 Twin Otter maybe? If you know the instruments in the Cessna you should find your way around this one fairly easily. It packs more punch though so everything happens a bit quicker. Has an autostart function too.

Seriously? You'd recommend the Airbus as a plane where you just press autostart, apply throttle and take off down the runway? I am kind of disappointed then...

Well, you can. The plane wont stop you. The ready for takeoff state sets it up to do that, as if the user had already done all to checklists and procedures upnto takeoff, except MCDU. (PMDG has this also).

The panel state isntjust an autostart, it reconfigures every switch to a certain position, in this case, when it would be ready for takeoff.

It won't fill out the whole MCDU though, so managed AP modes are unavailable.

The default state is cold and dark, so when comfortable with it, the pilot can learn the start procedures and go from there. I plan to have a full in-sim tutorial later on. That is why we held the training events, to show users how to properly operate the plane without using panel states.

(Also these states are immensely useful when developing)

Kind Regards,
Josh
