terraGIT airport RWY difference

terraGIT airport RWY difference

Postby bob755 » Wed Nov 15, 2017 4:08 pm

I downloaded scenery from terraGIT for the area covering LFMT

The previous terrasync scenery I was using had 31L/13L and 31R/13R which are the same as the FG aiport maps.
The scenery from terraGIT has RWYs 30L/12L and 30R/12R.

I looked up LFMT on www.sia.aviation-civile.gouv.fr which is the French gouvement site and the RWYs are indeed 30L/12L and 30R/12R.

Ho do I update the FG data?

FG data through terrasync distributed. But maybe it can be modified manually. Look: C:\Users\YOUR_USER_NAME\Documents\FlightGear\TerraSync\Airports\L\F\M\LFMT.threshold.xml

The files such a threshold.xml are the terraGit files located in a specific directory I created : C:\Users\YOUR_USER_NAME\Documents\FlightGear\CustomScenery.
I don't have the terra sync files anymore.

Modifiyng these files does not affect the maps which appear to be read from the FG data directory. The airport maps are available even if the scenery is not loaded which proves that they are not from the scenery files.
I think they are in the data/airports folder but I'm not sure it's a good idea to play around with these files.

apt.dat and similar define these properties... the entire world scenery is also built from them... building the world scenery takes a long time, several months the last time it was done... so the scenery is not built all the time... there is some work being done, however, to try to remedy this...

plus, if you have problems with scenery or craft provided by a 3rd party (FGMembers certainly qualifies) then you need to seek assistance from them in their support area(s)...

"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."

The problem is to know which is correct, the terraGIT scenery oy FG files.

Looking on the internet for LFMT, some charts show 31L/13L, 31R/13R and others show 30L/12L and 30R/12R.
Google Earth shows 30L/12L and 30R/12R So it seems that the FG files are wrong and terraGIT scenery is correct.

What is the procedure for posting this type of issue to the dev team?

There is no procedure, because the problem will fix itself when newer data is used to rebuild the scenery.

Runway numbers show magnetic courses. As you probably know, the Earth's magnetic poles move and as as a result runway numbers in real world change over time as well. Hence,

- Runways at LFMT were probably 31R/13R at the moment version 850 of apt.dat was collected (the version used by current terrasync)
- They were changed to 30R/12R in real life after version 850 of apt.dat was published. This has happened in many, many airports all around the world.
- Later versions of apt.dat (specifically, the version used by terraGIT) updated runway numbers.

In order to use an updated apt.dat, you must do a lot of things:

- update apt.dat, nav.dat and the many threshold, procedures, parking... files
- rebuild the whole world scenery in FlightGear and other satellite projects such as OpenRadar and ATC pie.

This process is not trivial and the official FlightGear scenery only run through it every 10 years or so. If you want to fly over an updated scenery, probably breaking other things in the process, your best bet is either building your own scenery or using a third party scenery such as terraGIT.

Finally I used WED to update LMFT in the apt.dat file.
This worked fine

that's easy... FG scenery files are correct for FG data files... no one ever said that the scenery would be up-to-date accurate... it is as accurate as was possible when the scenery was built ;)

Of course. No criticism here. I discovered FG very recently and I'm really impressed with the quality and the richness of this software.

If nothing else, this exercise has been useful to understand the whole scenery thing.
