Well, certainly not getting DNS info for the terrasync server is a problem outside of FG - possibly your ISP is in a better position to help you with this.

My ISP is a #1 provider for this area and is most reputable can't really see that being an issue as terrasync worked when I first started using Flightgear about a year ago. I'm perplexed over this issue :(

Well, the error is pretty clear - FG can't get DNS info, so it disables TS. Given that FG doesn't do that kind of thing for the rest of us, I think the conclusion is not rocket science.

Thanks, next step will be to check with my ISP, maybe something has changed with them since I 1st started using FG.

Much Appreciated,

Can you query the DNS record with

Code: Select all
host -t any terrasync.flightgear.org

"host" is a linux command.

The windows equivalent is "nslookup", which you run from the command line.
With the command "nslookup terrasync.flightgear.org", I get the response:-
Server: UnKnown
Address: 192.168.43.1
*** No internal type for both IPv4 and IPv6 Addresses (A+AAAA) records available for terrasync.flightgear.org

Despite that terrasync does work here, albeit slowly. It took 31 minutes to complete when I tried it this evening.

Sorry, for some reason I thought you were on a Mac system. Just rum the program cmd, or the powershell, and run the nslookup command Alan wrote about.

Did some research about nslookup and found the command nslookup -type=soa terrasync.flightgear.org

When plugged into router I get:
C:\WINDOWS\system32>nslookup -type=soa terrasync.flightgear.org
Server: dlinkrouter
Address: 192.168.0.1
DNS request timed out.
timeout was 2 seconds.
DNS request timed out.
timeout was 2 seconds.
*** Request to dlinkrouter timed-out

When plugged directly into cable modem I get:
C:\WINDOWS\system32>nslookup -type=soa terrasync.flightgear.org
Server: UnKnown
Address: 2001:1970:c06e:c0::94
flightgear.org
primary name server = dns0.easydns.com
responsible mail addr = zone.easydns.com
serial = 1510275658
refresh = 21600 (6 hours)
retry = 7200 (2 hours)
expire = 1209600 (14 days)
default TTL = 300 (5 mins)

Terrasync always fails when plugged into a dlink router port

Terrasync WORKED when plugged directly into cable modem. (AND IT WORKED FAST, DOWNLOADING NEW AIRPORTS IN SECONDS!)

NOW THE QUESTION IS WHY FAILURE WHEN PLUGGED INTO DLINK ROUTER AND SUCCESS WHEN DIRECTLY CONNECTED TO CABLE MODEM?????
ANY THOUGHTS ANYONE????

Hum, interesting. Could it be that when behind the router the router's security setup is blocking the port? You may have to open a port for FG.

Very unlikely, but I remember a DLink router DNS hijack vulnerability a while ago. I would reconfigure the DNS in the router though. First write down the current settings, then change everything! Look for any caching settings. And see if you can see if the router DNS is different to the direct connection.

FINALLY ISSUE RESOLVED!
I want to thank everyone for their help with this issue, helped me to learn more about FlightGear, DNS and also the "nslookup" command prompt command.

The entire problem was a defective router which I recently purchased, after returning the item and getting another router the problem was immediately resolved!
(BTW my automatic scenery downloads for a new airport are quite fast, usually less then a minute.)

Thanks again everyone for all the assistance, so very much appreciated!

I'm glad you are sorted Ron, That's what the communtity is about try ing to help fellow "flightgearers" with issues and trying to solve them! What one person doesn't suggest another will and usually in the end there is a solution! Even the person requesting the help finds the problem themselves! Anyway Happy flying! Don't forget to mark the topic you started as "solved" with the "tick" at the start oif the topic! Best wishes
