Launch of a new day! Project Driving GEAR 2.0 introduces real life vehicles.

This is Moskvich 400.

Looks great! But why did you delete all of the other vehicles that you had made? License problem?

There was no problem (yet). Rockstar allows their models to be ported with certain restrictions. But with what Take Two is doing these days, I felt it would be wise not to use their vehicles anymore.

There's Speed Dreams 2 which is an open source racing sim.

http://www.speed-dreams.org/

They also have a download page on SourceForge

Real world vehicles will be added once someone has made a simple GPS model with map like this (so that I can attach to every vehicle :) )

That map is already there, it's Stuart's work that is based on the MapStructure framework - it can be trivially added to any model in FlightGear by using roughly 10 lines of XML and 20 lines of Nasal code - for details, refer to the MapStructure article and/or the Canvas Snippets article: http://wiki.flightgear.org/Canvas_Snipp ... o_a_Canvas

In other words, all you need is a 3D model with a texture that is replaced using a Canvas placement: http://wiki.flightgear.org/Howto:Add_a_ ... r_aircraft

For starters, you could simply reuse an existing 3D model from another aircraft - for example: http://wiki.flightgear.org/Garmin_GPSMap_196

(Note that the display contents shown above is irrelevant, this would be replaced with the map you posted)

That's looking good - but you may want to change some of the defaults (size, resolution, scale, colors etc) - because it seems you can hardly use the device at the current settings ?
Depending on what you have in mind, some layers can be customized - see the section on styling and scaling, or start here: http://wiki.flightgear.org/Canvas_Snipp ... re_Styling

besides, you are probably not all that interested in navaid stuff - but all the ground network/OSM stuff that some folks have been working on ?
If so, I'd suggest to get in touch with ThomasS, who's done related work a while ago:

Will it be released on the FGUK website when it is completed?
