FlightGear Competition Soaring: VirtualOnlineContest

Postby D-ECHO » Wed Sep 06, 2017 11:44 am

Welcome everybody to the VirtualOnlineContest (VOLC)
Image

Here's how it works:
1.) Before flying: Register a competition callsign (two characters, alphanumerical, e.g. EC, N8 or 9C) by posting below and on the fgtracker page: https://fgtracker.ml/modules/fgtracker/
2.) Fly: Do a glider flight with one of these gliders on the FGTRACKER server (mpserver15.flightgear.org):
*ASK13
*Ka6
*ASK21
*ASW28
*ASW20
*LS4
*LS8
*Bergfalke
*DG-101G
*DG-1000
-> post below to add more gliders
3.) After flying: File a pilot report below containing these informations:
-Competition Callsign
-Departure Airport
-Type of takeoff (aerotow/winch)
-Destination Airport
-Aircraft
-Evidence (fgtracker link)
4.) Evaluation:
There are three leagues:
- FarFly: distance flown counts
- SpeedLeague: distance flown and average speed counts
- HighFly: maximum altitude counts
...and three evaluations:
- Monthly: Every month the three best pilots of each league and the best three pilots of all leagues are published
- Yearly: Every year the three best pilots of each league and the best three pilots of all leagues (yearly champions) are published
5. Rules
I) Only pure gliders may take part, later on motor gliders may be added
II) Takeoff may be accomplished by winch or by aerotow
III) Point evaluation:
III.I) Distance flown: Flights can count as direct flights or triangle flights, the decision is done automatically based on what brings more points.
III.I.I) Direct flights: The distance from the point of lift-off to point of touchdown counts. You get 1 point per kilometre.
III.I.II) Triangle flights: The distance between the three most far apart points counts. You get 0.7 points per kilometre.
III.II) Average speed: The calculated distance flown (as in III.I) is divided by the time between lift-off and touchdown. You get 0.1 points per km/h.
III.III) Maximum altitude: The maximum altitude as displayed by the flight tracker in metres.
III.IV) League FarFly: Every distance point counts.
III.V) League SpeedLeague: Average speed points are added to distance flown points.
III.VI) League HighFly: Raw maximum altitude in metres is compared

Being pretty new to FG soaring, I think this is a good idea. At least the first registered flight is reassuring, that some km are possible. Maybe an exchange of experiences is possible? I get along with ridges but hardly ever managed to center a thermal ...

May I register als LD, mainly ASW 28?

First attempt:
Competition Callsign LD
Departure and Destination: Locarno LSZL
Aircraft ASW 28
Weather: real weather, time set to noon, no thermals, minor ridge, probably minor points, but much fun :)
Takeoff: Winch.

-Type of takeoff (aerotow/winch): Winch
-Destination Airport: Invermere
-Aircraft: Ask-21
-Evidence (fgtracker link): https://fgtracker.ml/modules/fgtracker/ ... ID=6940354

Ah, we're getting to more participants, great! :D
I don't put in any weekly evaluations as we have just too few entries for that, so the first ranking will be September.

@Oswald:
direct points: none (departure and arrival airfield are equal)
triangle points: 36(36.1)

FarFly: 36 points
SpeedLeague: 37(36.9) points
HighFly: ~2385 meters

Congratulations!!!

@Pinto:

direct points: 210(209.6) points
FYI, I left the triangle calculation out, because I'm quite sure it would deliver less points (bearing in mind there is 0.7 points per km triangle and 1 point per km direct), if you want I can nevertheless calculate it to make absolutely sure you don't get too few points.

FarFly: 210 pts
SpeedLeague: 212pts
HighFly: ~2745meters

Congratulations!!!

Hey this sounds like fun!

What about the weather setup? Is it OK if I choose to do ridge gliding with a specific wind setup or do I have to choose real weather and make the best out of it?

As it's really not practicle to be having to wait until the good weather's there, you can choose weather on your own, as long as it stays in a realistic scale (no 50kts wind in an area that normally only has 2-5kts)
