Help us find our next default airport! [2018.1]

Postby Parnikkapore » Sun Sep 03, 2017 6:40 am

Do you know a nicely developed airport in a stunning scenery you'd like to make more popular? Do you want to draw FG attention to your country? Are you involved in scenery developments and want your work to be prominently visible? This is your chance to get involved!

Now that 2017.3 "Prague" is almost out (delayed for weeks due to holidays. Again.), let's pick the airports we'll go to this November!

Note: For any future releases where nobody volunteers to organize a poll the next default airports will be chosen based on the order in this poll.

What's needed now?

If you have a good idea for a default airport, please post a short description along with two screenshots (airport terminal buildings and airport seen embedded into the surrounding scenery) below. Once we have a few options (in a week or so), we'll have a poll and pick the most popular result.

Desired features are:

* well developed terminal buildings (on par with the other default airports)
* suitable for airliner operations
* nice scenery for VFR flights in the vicinity, possibly also smaller airports, ideally developed
* usability (should not need a gaming computer to get usable framerates)
(* possibly working AI traffic)

What'll be needed later?

For the airport that gets picked as the next default, we'd like to see a Wiki page describing the airport and popular VFR activities in the surroundings. Feel free to also share other aviation fun facts of the country with FG enthusiasts.

A general effort by scenery developers to populate the surroundings even more is also not the worst of ideas

Will the development team create better terrain for location XXX if it gets picked?

Usually the holdup for more detailed scenery is not bad intention but just publicly available data - the scenery is usually as good as the data we have permits. So the answer in general is no - we can't do that easily.

However, we have the ability of ship a custom tile with a stable version (and have had more detailed KSFO scenery than on terrasync in the past), and I think if someone has manually created/improved GPL custom scenery for a proposed default airport, we can ship a tile of that around the chosen location.

I want to see my home airport featured!

If the airport is already developed, Just place it here!

If the airport is not developed yet, get involved! Just placing buildings in the right places is easy but will have a big impact!

What does "Needs work" mean?

It means that the airport is suggested but could use some attention - once enough people like you worked on the airport, this tag would be removed and you can exist with pride!

So - let's all help to make FG more international by migrating around the world - show us what's to see in your region, or whatever you found elsewhere in the world!

EGKK:London Gatwick | London's second biggest airport, a nice and large gateway to London's OSM2city magic.
Last second runner

EDDI: Berlin Tempelhof

FACT: Cape Town | The surrounding scenery is pretty close to reality - you have table mountain nearby, several other interesting ranges not so far
Needs work

Honolulu International (PHNL)

Image

* the airport seems fairly developed, so work could go into the surrounding scenery and other airports

* Hawaii is very scenic - all the islands

* the new Truman carrier group is located nearby

* it's a Space Shuttle emergency landing site, so it can also be visited by the space community

* there's plenty of airports of all sizes around

Great. I'm also working on VTSP in Orbiter to make it my future secondary spaceport ;), right now of course I play around the cape. Already made a circuit with the DG (With ILS, landing smoothly with the stick but the craft decided to spin out of control on landing.)

I like the PHNL idea a lot.
Probably with an updated Terrain if anybody volunteers to create it.

Do we have good shapefile sources for Hawaii?

Well, we do have, they are already used in the current scenery, but where to get them is the question :D?

After some hours and with data from OSM and the Hawaii state (http://planning.hawaii.gov/gis/download-gis-data/ and http://planning.hawaii.gov/gis/download-gis-data/, it *seans* to be CC0, but still have to clarify), it looks like this:

I am still missing any urban and town data and I'm wondering where the current came from, is it a custom one and if yes, where to find it? or is it VMAP0/1?

Okay, I've tested it with VMAP0 and it's definetely not that, so there'll be no custom scenery unless someone can point me to the data used for the current scenery generation.

Honolulu brings back memories :) I remember following this suggested flight from Statto back in the day, many, many times:

Let me sweeten the Hawaii deal.... I'm currently researching plant life in Hawaii, and I suspect there'll be a dedicated vegetation package in the near future for the area.
