Flying between destinations

Postby Mark2017UKMAL » Thu Aug 24, 2017 4:41 pm

Hi everyone. I am new to the forum and was wondering if it is possible to fly from one chosen airport in one country to another . (Eg London Heathrow to Kuala Lumpur). If so, how do I go about putting this in place before takeoff? Many thanks

Totally possible.

Make sure terrasync is on, or download the scenery beforehand. If you're doing a big flight, I 100% recommend at least downloading your destination.

Go to https://skyvector.com and plan your flight. If you'd like to use radio navigation, plan it using VORs and NDBs. If you'd like to use GPS/the route manager, you can export it to .gpx off of Skyvector and load that straight into flightgears route manager.

If planning your own flight seems too daunting, check out https://www.simbrief.com/, http://onlineflightplanner.org/, or any other of the various online flight planning tools.

If you'd like to learn more about radio nav, check out http://www.navfltsm.addr.com/index.htm

And feel free to join one of FG's discord servers, there's usually someone around to help!

Just recently I've discovered https://flightplandatabase.com which provides flight plan downloads for FGFS directly.
Great source....

FWIW: one can also use flightgear's built-in routing capabilities... open the route manager, put in your starting and destination airports airports... in the waypoint list at the bottom, hilight the destination airport and then click the route button... you can also select your runways, SIDs and STARs if you like... i do, most always, look over the route in the CTRL-M map, though, because sometimes FG will select a waypoint that's way way way out of the way... i just remove it and maybe a few others while possibly adding in some of my own choosing... learning how to use the built-in route manager is pretty easy, too... you just have to remember its quirks (eg: hilite the waypoint you want to add a new entry after) and learn how to add altitudes and lon/lat entries in the proper format...
"You get more air close to the ground," said Angalo. "I read that in a book. You get lots of air low down, and not much when you go up."
"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."
