Active Shutter 3D Glasses?

Does anyone have experience using active shutter 3D glasses with Flightgear? And is so, will they work with a "normal" (non-special for 3D) monitor and graphics card? How would you rate the experience, vs say, using red/cyan anaglyphic glasses?
Control tower to a 747: “United 239 heavy, your traffic is a Fokker, one o’clock, three miles, Eastbound.”
United 239: “Approach, I’ve always wanted to say this… I’ve got the little Fokker in sight.”
