The Ercoupe. Developer wanted.

Postby pab » Sat Jan 24, 2015 1:54 am

All,

Sometime ago Jenton and I added the Ercoupe to FlightGear. Because of other things in life the development of the Ercoupe stopped a couple of years ago.

This year EAA is celebrating 75 years of the Ercoupe.

Is any developer interested in adopting on the Ercoupe?

See the link below for inspiration.

After the discussion in the mailing list about possibly adding the Ercoupe as a second default aircraft for the novice users I've added the appropriate shaders to the aircraft and tweaked the FDM a bit. It might need some more attention though since it's a little rough around the edges.

I've brought the Ercoupe as far as I would go for now.
The FDM has been improved
Reflection and shadow effects are added to the exterior and model
Instruments have been improved
Textures have been improved

All in all I quite like it now, the rough edges are gone.

Reflection and shadow effects are added to the exterior

Is there any effects added to the interior (shadow, rain drops, grain, Irradiance, frost/fog, flashlight). I haven't seen the texture sheets but maybe lightmap and AO. Do you want any of these affects?

Only Interior reflection, raindrops and shadow are applied.

If you wan to tinker with it from here be my guest, I quite like the way it handles and because of the way the controls work (aileron automatically controls rudder and steering) it is fun to fly with the mouse.

Previous (already some improvements by me):

Also a few new liveries were added.

It's amazing how the two pics are not that different on first glance, and yet there's so much more realism to the final version. So much of perception is in the subtleties...

I'm still working on the model, mostly interior work now.

Beautiful little aircraft! Flying with the auto-coordinated controls takes some getting used to...

I think there may be some problems with the FDM's ground collisions? When steering and taxiing on grass, the plane leans into the turn, with the inside wheel sinking into the ground. I once got flung several hundred feet into the air while slowly taxiing over grass...

I've never experienced the aircraft getting launched because of it myself but I did see the leaning and couldn't figure out why it does that (I never look really hard though).

I got an epiphany: The reynolds numbers based Roll moment due to yaw rate was trying to get the aircraft into a stall even with weight on wheels.

This is now fixed.
And needs a fix for AeromatiC++ too.

Does anybody have any clue what might have changed FlighgtGear side causing the user not being able to start the engine of the Ercoupe?

I've spent a few hours digging but must admit I'm clueless at this point.
It did work when I last touched it.
