USS Nimitz Supercarrier

Hello again chaps, I've just dropped by - for old time's sake* - to ask whether any of you would like to develop USS Nimitz for use in FGFS?

I have a 13MB Blender file and 64MB of associated Gimp .xcf files so that you can export the necessary .ac and .png files for working in FGFS. All I'm asking is for a responsible person to make a request and the files will be delivered. It took me over 500 hours to create the model for IL-2 Sturmovik and I guess that it should be convertible to FGFS in 10 hours or so. You may modify as you wish of course - for example, the flag number can be changed from '68' quite easily so that you have your own preferred supercarrier.

The WIP in the IL-2 SAS forum started here http://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/t ... 699.0.html
The model release is here http://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/t ... 211.0.html
A YouTube video is here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P68Q1__sOLw

*I was involved with FGFS quite a number of years ago but I now mainly work on IL-2 Sturmovik. I've still got a soft spot for FGFS.

@karla, that is beautiful work.

There are probably better fits to take this over than myself, but this is too nice to pass up. If no one else speaks up, i would certainly like to try to make this happen.

Hello

I've spent quite some time on improving FG carriers, and just saw your post.
I just finished porting/merging my efforts so they work on my local FG 2017.1.2 base now.

To integrate and animate the model, so it does what FG carriers can do up to now, I think that shouldn't be a very big problem.
My personal issue mostly is the way to bring my work back into official FG :?

So I would offer to give it a serious try to bring the model to a usable state in FG environment, including the necessary scenario(s) and post the work to my hangar on gitlab.
(as a reference see my main FG project: https://gitlab.com/mhab/ec130 and some effort on Red Arrows formation flight https://gitlab.com/mhab/BAE-Hawk)
I could then look for some help to finally commit this to FGdata :?

I hope to get useful exports from blender as I mostly used AC3D (the orig 3D editor for ac files) and am quite a newbie for blender.
If you agree, give me a chance ?

I have a view days left on holiday right away :)

Maybe I can help facilitate that when ready.

Hello karla

Just to avoid confusion. What kind of license will you release the model for ?
For FG it should be GPL2 afaik
After reading some background info of your work I cannot find license related info ...
and if the model will be free ?

Thanks

See the FlightGear Policy Document and Roadmap. The licence needs to be the GPLv2+, i.e.:

This program is free software; you can redistribute it and/or
modify it under the terms of the GNU General Public License
as published by the Free Software Foundation; either version 2
of the License, or (at your option) any later version
.

Just had a thought ... I'll check out your FGFS carriers (I'm installing your sim right now), look at the file structures and export the appropriate meshes and maps from Blender and Gimp. Then one of you can pick them up and do your XML stuff. Give me a day or two ...

There is no licence with the carrier; it's all my own work - meshes, textures - everything. Do what you want with it, It's my gift to a great community. (I'll copy the GPLv2+ in the download anyway).

I've just checked over the file structures of some of the FGFS aircraft carriers and think it's best just to offer up a Packed Blend file so that, whoever, can manipulate it how he wants.

Here is the Blend file - deleted -8Apr17 22 downloads (this link will be removed once the project is seen to be up and running).

If the responsible person requires the source Gimp files (for changing flag numbers, for example), or requires assistance, PM me and also make it public here.

This model is offered to the FGFS community under GNU General Public Licence terms (or whichever you guys prefer) and I declare that all the content is my own work.

I gave it a try with Blender 2.78a (Oct 2016)
and get error messages about missing textures ...
Code: Select all
read blend: C:\FlightGear_2017_1_2\data\Models\Maritime\Military\Nimitz\OS_24796.blend
Error: Unable to pack file, source path 'D:\IL2\models\CVN_68\maps\hull_1_2048.tga' not found
ERROR: Image "D:\IL2\models\CVN_68\maps\hull_1_2048.tga" not available. Keeping packed image
Error: Unable to pack file, source path 'D:\IL2\models\CVN_68\maps\hull_2_2048.tga' not found
ERROR: Image "D:\IL2\models\CVN_68\maps\hull_2_2048.tga" not available. Keeping packed image
Error: Unable to pack file, source path 'D:\IL2\models\CVN_68\maps\hull_3_2048.tga' not found
ERROR: Image "D:\IL2\models\CVN_68\maps\hull_3_2048.tga" not available. Keeping packed image
Finished exporting in 4.0 seconds

As the blender file is not ASCII I don't know how to proceed ...

I used Blender 2.78a to load it also, and it gave no warnings of any kind at loading.

I could also export it. I had to update the export script a little bit though, don't know what script you use, but if you use the one I maintain, then I recommend trying this branch to avoid errors: https://github.com/NikolaiVChr/Blender- ... WithMatrix
Notice, if you use that, there is some work to do before exporting though, as stuff (mainly the deck) the texture in material doesn't match what's in the UV editor. So some materials needs some changing before it outputs it as it should look.
