Fluctuating FPS

Postby Clive2670 » Mon Jan 30, 2017 7:29 pm

Hi all, I am having some problems with 2016.4.4, I have some very noticable frame rate fluctuations. I am flying a 777-200LR and FPS will constantly vary between 1 FPS up to a MAX of 12/18 FPS (12/18 is VERY rare though, Normally just fluctulates between 1 and 9 FPS), either on the ground or flying, The only settings I have "maxed out" in the shaders (custom) settings are water and model, No rembrandt (Switched OFF) I like to run MP so I can log my flight hours with Tracker / Planner. Also extra setting at the splash screen added are:
--visibility=150000
--prop:/local-weather/config/ground-haze-factor=250
--prop:/sim/rendering/clouds3d-vis-range=370000
--prop:double:/sim/rendering/static-lod/ai-detailed=0
--prop:double:/sim/rendering/static-lod/ai-range-mode-pixel=1
--prop:double:/sim/rendering/static-lod/detailed=3000
--prop:double:/sim/rendering/static-lod/rough=20000
--prop:double:/sim/rendering/static-lod/bare=300000
I run my scenery from a folder within the Flightgear folder in my documents which contains the whole world which is Terramaster 1.4 based. Terrasync is swtched OFF
My system details are:
Intel core i5 4210U 1.7 Ghz boosted to 2.4Ghz
6Gb Ram, 32Gb Readyboost micro SD card,
AMD Radeon R7-M260 1 Gb GPU (Most up to date software)
Any ideas anyone as reasonable scenery would be nice with (I'm not greedy) around 20/25 FPS STABLE!!!!
Many thanks in advance of any ideas!
Thanks Clive aka: G-BLS01

if it fluctuates notably, it's likely not rendering-related (unless you shift the view all the time) - so then the next suspect is aircraft systems. Try an external view looking into the sky (=hardly any rendering load) and check what framerates are doing then. Also, try a different plane.

Ok Thorsten, will try that, and get back to you, now starting a flight, just checked my task manager, sitting on the ground at EGKK and I'm getting: CPU load of 50%, 81% RAM load, 0.1% Disc load, 0.1% network load FYI

No change in FPS from inside / outside, or even from "tower view" I'm going to try reverting back to 2016.3.1, as this seemed more stable on my machine and see what happens

Do you have AI Traffic on? That certainly eats up some of my framerate.

Yes I do, tried turning it OFF absolutely no change to FPS!

Your LOD settings are pretty high. As is your clouds 3D visual range. Try turning all those down by about half of what they are now. Also are you using vegetation?

These LODs were sent to me on a previous post within a question I posed about terramaster, and it digressed slightly. wkitty42 supplied these LODs to me within that post, I have lowered them slightly, but as you can see by the posts above, they are not maxing out the CPU, RAM and just checked my GPU and its only using 350Mb of the 1Gb available, the core clock is running at full "chat" and the memory clock is as well, and it's not showing signs of distress (Temperature is well below its Max. Its 75 degrees and can run up to 100 degrees)

I have reverted back to 2016.3.1. Now I have a more stable 15 FPS which is a lot more "flyable" or should I say "landable" as that was the main issue....stuttering at landing....last thing any pilot wants is something hitting the "pause button" at the last second as you are going to flare.......then 1 second later....thats another B******s landing...on the grass trying to make a silk purse out of a pigs ear...that happened the other night when I tried to show how good I was at the ILS approach and switch off autopilot at around 1000 ft to do the normal (manual) landing that any pilot would......down to 1 FPS pause everything, then oh we'll start up again but instead of 1000 ft from the ground I'm now at the 50 Ft call out!!!! oh dear grass here we come...and some very amused friends and it doesn't matter how many perfect flightgear tapes of perfect landings you show them, they never do take your skills seriously again!!!

--prop:double:/sim/rendering/static-lod/rough=20000
--prop:double:/sim/rendering/static-lod/bare=300000

these look similar to my old settings i used to use before the LOD system had some work done on it... now i'm running with the following...
--prop:double:/sim/rendering/static-lod/detailed=1500
--prop:double:/sim/rendering/static-lod/rough=15000
--prop:double:/sim/rendering/static-lod/bare=150000

you can also try turning off the 3D clouds and letting the Detailed Weather deal with the clouds...

aside from that, i've also switched from AI pixel range mode to kms and have that distance now set to 50000 which is kinda far unless you zoom in a lot looking for them at that range... IRL you generally won't see another craft until they are within 5 to 10 kms... you might spot them by contrails, though...
"You get more air close to the ground," said Angalo. "I read that in a book. You get lots of air low down, and not much when you go up."
"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."

Ok thanks for wkitty42,, guess you remember the post that you sent them to me by? I've reverted back to 2016.3.1 now (last night) it has "upped" the frame rate to 15-20 FPS even with your original settings set on it, compared to the same on 2016.4.4....So it begs the question (maybe you can't answer but I'll still ask it in the hope that one of the code programmers are reading this post) With all the settings in both 3.1 & 4.4 set the same, why such a major difference in FPS rates? Has the code had any signifcant changes made to it for 4.4 that has made the FPS drop and stutter so badly compared to 3.1?
Anyway I will try the "new & hopefully inproved" setting in 3.1 tonight and see if there are any improvments on 15-20 FPS and post back. Thanks again

Thorsten, Just reverted back to "3.1" in the hope that it might be better....sadly not, I have noticed through extensive trials of "turning things off" with in the program that EVERY time I turn off AI aircraft within flight in the AI menu that FG instantly crashes. Is there any significance to this? Haven't tried to see if this happens in 4.4 yet, but does this show a problem with the AI coding within my program that is causing the "jittering" and regular "stalling" of FPS? I also noticed that when I bring up the box within the debug sub-menu for (I think) observing the whole of FG systems) that the "iterations" in the right hand box ALL vary at the same rate (and at the same time) between 13 and 7) if this is relevent I don't know?

The process would probably speed up if you'd followed the advice given. Reverting back to older versions won't get anything fixed as a rule, because we won't revert the official distribution back to a few releases past. So if you want to trace a problem, you'll have to do it in the newest version.

Okay, if I got the message right, if you look up and see nothing but blue sky, same framerates. Now, what about if you do the same thing in the ufo?

@Clive, regarding FG crashing when turning off AI, I had the EXACT same issue.

You need to put this in your additional settings dialog (if using the Qt launcher) or just as one of the properties in fgrun or whatever you use to start flightgear:

--disable-ai-traffic
This command is pretty self explanatory.
Hope this helps!

Hi Thorsten, Tried UFO, very little change in FPS, maybe one or two more per minute, But still very jittery fluctuates between 3 FPS and about 19 FPS no change if I disable everything such as AI, 3d clouds, particles, ETC, even with basic weather, and no METAR, still no change, tried clearing the navdata with %appdata% command in "run" window, no real change either. This wouldn't have anything to do with the scenery is configured would it? I have downloaded the whole world with Terramaster 1.4 and my folder that this is in is: C:\Users\Clive\Documents\FlightGear\Custom Scenery\TerraSync\New TerraMaster Scenery 1. I have not got terrasync turned on as I just point flightgear at this folder for all scenery.
