Please vote for the next default airport

Postby chris_blues » Tue Sep 27, 2016 2:05 pm

These are the airport candidates as proposed here. Some of these candidates would need quite some work from our scenery team, some are already well developed and need only some fine tuning.

VHXX: Honk Kong Kai Tak, China (closed)

I think Zurich will be the winner, but has two airports that I really liked, Prague and Bergen.
I have not voted yet.

At the moment it looks like Zürich is going to be our next default. But this poll is going to be running for another week, so this might still change dramatically...

Hello FlightGear developers

For the next release of FGFS I wish the VHXX (Hong Kong Kai Tak) should be used. Allows Custom Scenery by Thomas Albrecht
( https://gitlab.com/fgradi/custom_scenery_VHXX.git )
a preview of the future scenery 3.0. Although Kai Tak no longer exists in real life, but the approach is fine for practicing extreme
approach situations. :D

Have the Custom Setting by Th. Albrecht incorporated in 2016.3.1 and find the airport just fine.

Chris. I recommend the proposal for a European airport EDDW and/or EDXW.

Well, we had San Francisco, USA (Northamerica) for <=2016.1, Barcelona, Spain (Europe) for 2016.2, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil (Southamerica) for 2016.3, now some of the candidates for 2016.4 are in Europe (again):
  • Prague Czech Republic
  • Zürich Switzerland
  • Bergen Norway
In my opinion, I think, Asia or anything else should be next. But my opinion is irrelevant in this matter, or rephrased: I also had only one vote, like everybody else.

I'm sorry to say, but for your proposals of EDDW and/or EDXW, you are a little late! But don't let that bother you! Just bring up your proposals for the next release! Just look out for topics like this: The FlightGear project -> Please help to find the next default airport

I agree, that VHXX scenery is outstanding, though the other airports also have their own charme...

Cheers
chris

@chris_blues: im agree with you about to distribute better the default airports over the world in next releases, but this is dependent about the proposals and people involved. Maybe the second or third proposals are more as good candidates for the next voting polls..

A difficult choice, good and beautiful airports, but I will vote for Bergen, enjoyed the landscape.

one of the things to think about when choosing a new default airport is initial flights for newbies and tutorials that may also include flights... for newbies to have something to follow and scenery way points look at while they are flying around is an attention drawer...
"You get more air close to the ground," said Angalo. "I read that in a book. You get lots of air low down, and not much when you go up."
"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."

Hello Chris,

VHXX is indeed in "real life" not actual. Got the VHXX custom scenery looked exactly. It´s built with the osm-city-project. On the highways drive vehicles and at night with lighting.
Works on my computer configuration with 40+ fps. That´s great.

What do you think about it?
Has osm-city future for FlightGear?

Am looking forward to your reply.

OSM2city project looks very nice IMHO. I hope it becomes a standard some day...

And the winner is LSZH "Zürich"!

Now I let the scenery team take over and let them make this yet another stunning release! Details about LSZH are here (forum) and here (wiki).

Cheers

Nice!
I can try and make a custom scenery for Zürich :D
[EDIT]Here is a first test-build with only evergreenforest landclass and the airports:

If you want, I can get a fully working one done by today or tomorrow (or the day after tomorrow).

LSZH has updated apt.dat in the x-plane gateway from July this year, maybe you'll want to include that in your custom builds?

I see that the groundnet needs some work, it has all parking position types = gates (even the obvious GA ones), it has all radiuses = 54, no push-back, and all parking positions have heading=0. Let's see if we can fix it...
