You can join the mailing list and turn the emails off, reading the list via the website but still able to email messages to it.

I expect that number to double over the next month. I frankly don't need any more email traffic, so I hope you can understand my reluctance to join yet another mailing list, the contents of which are almost 100% over my head or otherwise irrelevant to me.

I do appreciate your intervention. I'm rather surprised that James doesn't routinely test his own output in the only form it's available to ordinary users. I'll refrain from asking any more obvious questions... :)

not sure if you're being deliberately ironic. if you haven't got time to read the devel-list then surely it's fine that James doesn't have the time to grab every nightly and test it....

alternatively, consider using the issue tracker to make bug reports or feature requests - which doesn't require tracking either the devel list or the forum.
Please don't send support requests by PM, instead post your questions on the forum so that all users can contribute and benefit

Newsflash - I don't either. I have no inclination to spend an hour downloading a copy of FGData every weak to test just on the random chance that it might be different from my GIT clone of it. I'd be surprised if anyone does.

We test whether things run on our own build setup, then it gets pushed and tested by others, and unless there's a problem report sent to the list, we all assume the changes are fine. That's how a devel version works.

I think some people do check the stable packages whether they install before a release.

But even conceptually it's a sound principle that it's not the same people who do development and testing (since I know how things should operate, I never misuse my own features...)

james has posted that it is working fine on his system and that it must be something in the build server's configuration... the cocoa plug-in is in the proper place in the bundle, too... anyway, we can only give him some more time to look into it...

[aside: only 250 emails a day? i know the feeling... i used to read, after an 8-12 hour $$$ paying work day, ~1000 posts a day and write roughly 150+ in free support responses... but that was back in the BBS days when we didn't have all this graphics mess slowing everything down ;) ]

"Why not?" said Gurder.

Hi!
Just to let you know that I have the same problem. (Not useful to know, but anyway).

Hope that james will find the solution soon!

FWIW, today's 2016.2.1-rc fails with the same error.

sorry... what release candidate? AFAIK, there are no such things any more... the new game is rolling releases every three months... bugs or no...

If that's not the build we're supposed to be testing, then help me make some sense of the wacky, fragmented scattering of confusingly-named FG versions.

I'll try to explain the numbering:

Major version number This is the year, e.g. 2016.
Minor version number This is the number of the release for the year. E.g. 1, 2, 3, 4 (assuming four releases for the year).
Release number The version 0 is the unstable development version. 1 is the first stable release. 2 will be for important bugfixes, if required.
So the second stable release for this year is 2016.2.1. Although maybe not completely announced yet, the 2016.2.1 version has been released.

i may be mistaken but my understanding is as i described... why there was a -rc file created i don't know... it was possibly done while the scripts were updated for the new release so that nothing would be lost... there were a few iterations of commits during that phase of preparation...

PS: @someguy: did you get my PM i sent you?

It might be worth asking Torsten on the mailing list.

Part of my confusion is not knowing all the places to check for new releases. The official download page still shows 2016.1.2. Jenkins is hopeless--build 2993 allegedly contained both 2016.2.1 and 2016.3.0! I know what the release numbers are supposed to mean, but WTF? I'm downloading the one in Torsten's happy birthday post right now, without any real hope it will work.
