The album description
Here you will enjoy awesome quality 3D vision of moments captured in the multiplayer virtual space created by FlightGear, a wonderful open source flight simulator. The album contains pictures (latest first) from different versions of the simulator itself and of a few of the available aircraft and scenarios.
You will only need very cheap red-cyan glasses (*). It still amazes me how weird the pictures look without the glasses and how magically good they are with them on. I recommend LOW AMBIENT LIGHT, especially useful to appreciate the dusk and night pictures.
New to 3D anaglyph vision?
The best strategy is to PUT ON THE GLASSES FIRST and ONLY AFTERWARDS START WATCHING THE PICTURE. If you saw it on your screen before putting on the glasses, you might need to stop watching, switch to another picture, and watch again. You won't be looking at a flat plane at a fixed distance but THROUGH A WINDOW. If you keep that in mind, your eyes and brain should find the right convergence, just like in reality. It might take you a while the first time, though.
You will notice that I love watching clouds, especially at dusk. Each time I traveled by plane, I spent hours and hours watching the sky.
Some of these pictures are always breathtaking to me when I watch them. Others are the souvenir of flights with friends from all over the world, whom I came to meet in the FlightGear multiplayer virtual space (you can chat exchanging text messages from inside FlightGear itself, which I'm not very fond of, or talk over Mumble or over FGCom, the FlightGear radio simulation system).
As for the flight simulation itself, I'm a JSBSim fan:

But there are many other planes which I came to love and many more which I haven't tried so far.
This hardware:
- 2,4 GHz Quad 6600 on Asus P5KC motherboard (pretty old admittedly), 8 GB DDR2 RAM

oldest pictures NVidia XFX GeForce 8800 GT Alpha Dog Edition, 512 MB DDR3 RAM (great for the money but rather noisy and tends to run hot)
afterwards NVidia Asus GeForce GTX660, 2GB DDR5 RAM
A more recent motherboard would have faster transfer rate to this video card, in simple scenarios with not complex objects I get 60+ fps in stereo 3D anaglyph, in some scenarios I can have some stuttering, in others I switch off 3D clouds or other features, in worst cases I had sometimes to switch to normal 2D output but new FlightGear versions are faster and Icetail (the developer of the JA37 Viggen) passed me a couple of properties to gain speed, apart of course not forgetting to switch on multithread in the preferences file after installing a new version (and eventually using renice on Linux to give to the fgfs process higher priority, I had posted about this and yet haven't synthesized on the wiki, I wanted to have the same FlightGear version on Arch Linux, Ubuntu and Windows for tests, but I think that is never going to happen):

(*) I see on Amazon for 1.88 U$D (December 2014) the excellent "NVidia 3D Vision Discover" glasses. They are a bit fragile however, pay attention when putting them on and taking them off. For less than two dollars, you might want to get a backup pair. I can use them on top of my corrective glasses.
